Ronda Rousey is teaming up with the Diaz brothers
We've already seen footage of Ronda Rousey training with Nick Diaz, but now it's official: she'll be spending a few weeks down at Cesar Gracie's training with the gang:
Yeah, I’m going up there from the 3rd to the 16th (of April) and it’s going to be the first time ever since I started doing MMA that I’m going to be training for an actual extended period of time away from my core camp, who I’ve always been with. When I did judo I used to go around all the time, like every month or so I would go away for a week or two weeks to go train somewhere else. For some reason, it’s something I never did in MMA, so they invited me to come train up there.
Training isn't the only area she's been branching out in. She's also been working hard on her media persona:
SN.ca: You seem to understand the difference between sports and sports/entertainment. When did you develop the understanding that you can’t just be an athlete, that you also have to promote yourself?
RR: That’s why you never heard of me when I did judo. I was just competing and I never really did much to put out my name, or wear makeup or get dressed up or went out of my way to do extra interviews. That’s why no one ever heard of me and why I was pretty broke. Now I had to switch careers and turn my (personality) on and I’m doing pretty well. I had to bring more of an energy aspect to it sooner or later, but I wasn’t always that way. It was a progression from my first amateur fight until now. I knew when I started doing MMA, I would have to think more about how people see me instead of just going out there and fighting. As time went on and I had more spare time and money to pay attention to that kind of stuff, I started working on it more and more. We’ll see how it goes because I have a lot of opportunities coming up and I have a lot of people working with me and helping me. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the next couple months.
SN.ca: Is Chael Sonnen one of those people helping you?
RR: (LAUGHS) He gave me some advice the other day that I needed to hear. He’s not one of the main people I work with, but I’ve talked to him before and he had some very interesting and smart things to say.
Ronda was recently seen canoodling with Chael Sonnen in a coffee shop, so maybe that's where he gave her that advice. Did they talk about overexposure? Was that something they touched on? Because I love Ronda Rousey and even I'm getting sick of posts about her every day.

The other side of the TRT coin
It seems crazy to me that we're debating whether or not to let MMA fighters take testosterone. But here we are. Several of the big names in MMA have come out and not only admitted they take it, but will continue to take it because they have prescriptions from their doctor. So I guess a big question here is if those prescriptions are bogus. Past evidence says probably. But here's the other side of the coin:
According to Catlin along with many other critics, the possibility of professional athletes in their 30s needing TRT is so low, it's almost completely zero.
But new research might show those long-held beliefs to be incorrect.
The science of brain injury is still relatively new, and developing rapidly. In 2007, a paper published in the Journal of Athletic Training reported the first known connection between mild concussions and hypopituitarism, a deficiency that can lead to low testosterone.
That research, along with how traumatic brain injuries impact the pituitary gland, is being continued by Dr. Daniel F. Kelly, the director of the Brain Center and Pituitary Disorders Program at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.
Kelly is currently in the midst of a study of 75 former NFL players that is expected to be published around the end of 2012. In an interview with MMA Fighting, Kelly said that preliminary data from the study suggests that pituitary damage is occurring in a subset of the retirees.
That study seems to corroborate a 2006 finding in Turkey that found that head injuries incurred by pro kickboxers have resulted in damage to the pituitary gland.
Well crap. Not only are they noticing new forms of brain damage, it could be a specific side effect of competing in MMA for years. Maybe suggesting fighters stop fighting when that kind of head trauma is present. They're free to take testosterone if they want ... once they're no longer competing.

TUF Brasil: Episódio Um
The first episode of the first regional spin-off of "The Ultimate Fighter" went down on the interwebs last night, and while I presume the UFC would kinda like us to watch it, they're not making it easy. Why it's not just aired on FuelTV is a mystery, and navigating the UFC's various websites isn't exactly intuitive. For example, there's few if any obvious links to episodes of either TUF 15 (aka TUF Live) or TUF Brasil on ufc.com, ufc.tv wants to charge you to watch TUF 15 but it's free on ultimatefighter.com, and neither of those even mentions TUF Brasil which has it's own separate site at en.tuf.tv. WTF. Throw in a little geo-blocking here and there and things get downright fun.
Anyways, if you were already snug in bed like me when TUF Brasil aired at midnight last night (again, WTF), you can check it out HERE. Again, I note that this video is linked from en.tuf.tv but actually hosted on ufc.com... more like "WTF: Brasil", amirite? And if that video doesn't work for you, perhaps "piracy" can come to your rescue. Not that I'm encouraging such crimes, just sayin'.

Iffy knockout takes away from Kimbo's comeback
Here's the last round of Kimbo Slice's boxing match from over the weekend. Kimbo comes back from losing on the scorecard to knock his opponent out with 3 seconds left in the fight. Amazing! Exciting! Inspiring! Well, not really. Check out the footage - the knockout comes at around 4 minutes. Does that look like a legit knockout to you?
This wouldn't be the first time Kimbo's combat sports career has attracted a fishy smell. His first opponent Bo Cantrell went down the first opportunity he got. There was that iffy stoppage in the James Thompson fight. And lest we forget Standgate, where Seth Petruzelli was basically asked by EliteXC promoters not to take Kimbo down.
At least this is boxing's problem now.

MMA fighters go Survivor
I'm a man of complex and varied tastes. Which is why I'm not just big on mixed martial arts, I also love My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and reality shows like Survivor. If you haven't been watching this season, you're doing yourself a great disservice. They loaded up on dumb as rocks contestants and they're all an episode or two away from going Lord of the Flies on each other. I just wish the gay guy hadn't been struck down with appendicitis. First Dakota on TUF, now Colton on Survivor. It's like The Lord is trying to tell us something :-O
Fans of MMA and Survivor now have some interesting stuff to look forward to in the coming weeks. March 30th sees the debut of "The Treasure of Orange", a Dutch Survivor knockoff featuring celebrities digging for treasure on an island somewhere. The show's original Dutch name: De Schat van De Oranje. I haven't giggled that much since MMA Fighting introduced me to Shaun Al Shatti.
Also headed off on a Survivor knockoff adventure: Akiyama, who will appear on 'Laws of the Jungle', which sees contestants living in the jungles of Papua New Guinea for 20 days.
If the natives run into this gang they'll know who the bronze God is.

M-1 Global, exhibit 2: Yasubey Enomoto fought with a horrible skin infection
It looks like it might be coming down to a cheerful, lighthearted decision for M-1 global fighters: either jump ship and end up several hundred thousand euros in debt to an international court, or do what M-1 global says and get flesh-eating bacteria. THOSE ARE THE ONLY TWO POSSIBILITIES! According to people who evidently know, Yasubey Enomoto was allowed to fight Rashid Magomedov for his title despite being on IV antibiotics for a horrible skin infection that actually burst open during the event:
"He fought with an infection on his shin and was on antibiotics the whole week prior to the fight," said his brother Felipe Enomoto, "That's why it was taped, because he had a huge open wound there." Felipe said that his brother's infection got even worse. It has been almost two weeks after the bout, and Yasubey is still getting treated in the hospital.
"The infection has now spread [to] his knee because the heat in the sauna during the weight cut," Felipe Enomoto said, "Right now, he has been in the hospital for 3 days because of that, with an IV that puts antibiotics in his blood nonstop. Also I wish my brother to get well fast from this, because I'm in Thailand right now and can not visit him in hospital."
"I only say this because I'm so proud of him for still fighting, (but) maybe not the smartest idea to fight with this" Felipe continued, "He was not backing down an inch, always attacking like a true champion! Samurai style!"
Awesome, he not only gushed antibiotic-resistant pus on everyone else within a 20-foot radius, he did it Samurai style! Maybe his expertise in the field of herpes diagnosis led him to come up with this brilliant strategy. This would be disturbing on so many levels if it wasn’t a hilarious caricature of the days when shady Russian promoters got Douglas Dedge killed to record the first death in modern MMA history.
If you want to look at that gangrene fly (and really, who doesn’t?), you can check out the videos of the match after the jump.

Meanwhile, in Japan...
Ronda Rousey ain't the only one willing to fight dudes. Here's Cris Cyborg fighting comedian / karate black belt Savannah Yagi on the Japanese game show Honoo No Taiikukai. That's the same dude who fought Kyra Gracie when she was in Japan - and thought she was only showing up to do a 'demonstration', not actually fight.
It could have been worse. One Korean fighter ended up taking on three comedians on a show (one of whom tried to launch a K-1 career in the past) and they basically whupped her from post to post for the lols. Yagi doesn't get Cyborg that bad but I'm sure she loved the judo throw.

M-1 crushes fighter in court
More legal wranglin' afoot, this time in Europe. If you thought America was the only place where a young naive mixed martial artist could get trapped in a predatory contract and legally screwed, you were wrong!
M-1 Global has staked claim to Bellator middleweight Vyacheslav Vasilevsky in a Dutch court and plans to pursue the fighter in the U.S.
A judgment won this past Thursday awards damages to the Russia-based promotion that amount to several hundred thousand euros and bars him from fighting in Bellator or any other organization. Neither Vasilevsky or his representatives were present in court.
...
The judgement orders Vasilevsky to pay €1,000 for each day he's been in breach of contract as well as €5,000 for every day he fights in another promotion, plus court fees, Kogan said. He added that the fighter was served notice of the pending legal action by process server.
I know what you're thinking. €1,000 a day is a pittance. Vyacheslav should be paying at least €3000 - €5000 a day. That's more in line with the big bucks guys like him, Bellator and M-1 are dealing with. It was a bad day for this kid to mistake euros for rubles. Depending on how long VV's been considered in breach of contract, this is going to add up to nearly a million euros. And I bet you thought M-1 could only scam the big bucks out of people using Fedor Emelianenko.
This might be P4P the new #1 worst legal beatdown performed on an MMA fighter. Wow. Again. Never thought M-1 would have the P4P #1 anything moving forward.

Browser Crasher: Bellator 62 - Lightweight Quarterfinals
Patricky 'Pitbull' Freire vs. Lloyd 'Cupcake' Woodard
-Lightweight Tournament Quarterfinal-
Woodard via Submission (Kimura), 1:46 of Rd 2
Woodard is the first man to finish Pitbull. Fractured his arm.
What a fight. What an upset. I doubt that most thought it would be an easy fight, but Patricky was surely expected to pull out the win. Cupcake doesn't care about your expectations. He fought fearlessly, and was constantly on the attack, pressuring Pitbull, and drawing him into the clinch and close quarter brawls. It was Woodard’s clinch knees that ultimately turned the tide, as he rocked a visibly slowing Pitbull on two occasions.
Exchange-Takedown-Scramble | Off-Balance Knockdown & Slam | Clinch Knees
Pitbull Reversal & Takedown | Pitbull TD-Mount, Woodard Reversal | Pitbull Rocks Lloyd
Woodard Knee & TD Reversal | Finish | Finish alt angle | Lloyd mugging
