SD-X markings are applied in the normal printing process and do not add significantly to the cost of print production. No special paper is required. The process begins with the identification of areas on the page to be enabled. These areas are outlined and filled with index codes, and this "mapped" file is used to generate the film that controls the K (carbon black) channel on an offset press. Three of the four additional channels on the press are standard yellow, cobalt, and magenta. The fifth channel is non-carbon black either purchased or made from a combination of the three non-carbon colored inks.

SD-X is currently working to develop a digital printing process for commercial and home use.
