MERCE CUNNINGHAM DANCE COMPANY has had a profound impact on American art and the avant-garde since its founding in 1953. Guided by Merce Cunningham’s radical approach to space, time, and technology, the Company forged a distinctive style, reflecting Cunningham’s technique and illuminating the near limitless possibility for human movement. For more than fifty years, MCDC collaborated with groundbreaking artists from all disciplines, redefining the way audiences experience the visual and performing arts. WIth Merce Cunningham's passing in 2009, MCDC embarked on its final, two-year world tour. Launched in February 2010 at the Wexner center in Columbus, Ohio, the Legacy Tour was a celebration of Cunningham's lifetime of artistic achievement, showcasing 18 seminal works from throughout his career - including the revival of seven historic dances - to offer audiences around the world a final opportunity to see Cunningham's choreography performed by the company he personally trained. The Legacy Tour concluded with performances at Park Avenue Armory on New Year's Eve 2011.
The fourteen final dancers of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (seven women and seven men) performed the works of Merce Cunningham with the collaboration of contemporary musicians and visual artists. The activities of the company (rehearsals, performances, residencies, tours) were supported by the Cunningham Dance Foundation (Board of Directors and administration) and by the generosity of government bodies, foundations, corporations, and individual donors. |
Merce Cunningham Dance Company (1953 - 2011)
The dancers have been, and continue to be, the life of my work. It is to them that I am most indebted, for their dedication and energies and willingness under favorable or trying conditions, to work at something which was for long outside the experience of most people, whether players or public, and to be able to face indifferent or even hostile audiences with equanimity. And together, I hope they will agree, despite the unfamiliarity of the work, we have tried to hold a standard that for me is the balance of the tightrope. One side is to have the clarity, the strength, the virtuosity of movement and its demands of the body, like flexible steel. The other side is the abandon, if I may use the word, that allows you to be human. It is a wonderful performance koan.
