Dave Nelson Announces Debut EP Logistic Minutia Out September 20th
Touring now with The National
Brooklyn-based trombonist, composer, and arranger Dave Nelson will self-release his debut EP Logistic Minutia on September 20th. After two years working alongside some of the most celebrated artists in the indie rock and classical worlds–including Jónsi, The National, Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and John Adams–Minutia shows Nelson using his experience playing with a diverse array of adept practitioners to explore the currents of contemporary rock, jazz and classical genres.
The concept for the four-song instrumental EP formed in 2009 while Nelson was living in his native Georgia, performing with indie jazz/rock artist Dan Nettles of Kenosha Kid in Athens. The band’s compositional detail and genre-bending approach energized the initial sketches of Minutia, which continued to evolve when Nelson moved to New York City and began performing extensively in its vibrant indie rock and contemporary classical scenes. The result is an adventurous yet accessible blend of jazz-rock, fittingly performed by a classic rock band setup and four-piece horn section on the EP.
With influences ranging from David Byrne, Frank Zappa, Depeche Mode, Philip Glass, Michael Gordon, Hugh Masekela to–of course–Kenosha Kid, each melody, brass blast, and synthesizer flourish melds together to create an imprint rich with inspiration. The EP will be performed live in New York City this fall.
