Kate Daniels
The world has suffered a magic apocalypse. We pushed the technological progress too far, and now magic returned with a vengeance. It comes in waves, without warning, and vanishes as suddenly as it appears. When magic is up, planes drop out of the sky, cars stall, electricity dies. When magic is down, guns work and spells fail.
It’s a volatile, screwed-up world. Magic feeds on technology, gnawing down on skyscrappers until most of them topple and fall, leaving only skeletal husks behind. Monsters prowl the ruined streets, werebears and werehyenas stalk their prey; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst of knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds.
In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she spent most of her life hiding in plain sight. But sometimes even trained killers make friends and fall in love, and when the universe tries to kick them in the face, they kick back.

I love the winter graphic on the header – Curran with the snowballs on his nose, Mahon looking embarrassed at the “kids” playing.
The tweets made my day & I can’t wait until Magic Slays! I swallowed the first 4 books whole via Kindle in less than a week this fall. Then came everything else you’ve written that I could get my hands on the following week.
Please keep it up!
I just wanted to say I love these books, I have thoroughly enjoyed them and have re-read them a dozen times. Kate is one of my favorite characters, and Curran is awesome. I can’t wait to read “Magic Slays”, i know it will be a great read.
[...] Favorite Hero of 2010: Curran from Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series [...]
I LOVE the humor you guys work into your stories!! I now have to be careful where I read your books because I get a silly, happy little smile on my face while i’m reading your books and often I start laughing out loud. My family are constantly poking fun at me about it. So now when I read around them I have to hold the book up in front of my face to hide my grins.
Your books have fast become favorites of mine, i’ve read everything you have published and you rank pretty high as one of my favorite fantasy authors, alongside Patricia Briggs, Kelley Armstrong, and Charlaine Harris. So yeah, thanks for sharing Kate Daniels and the Edge with me, i’m very grateful, your very awesome. Please keep writing its hard to find your kind of great story telling.
Brown nosing aside, I have a few questions:
Is Kate 7 the definitive last book you will write for this series? or is there the possibilty of more if your publishers buy in again with a new contract? (Same question for the edge series)I know its premature but i’m already dreading the end of the series, although I suppose in the event of an ending, I could be placated with a new series written by you… but it would still be quite sad.
End of rambling.
I have to agree with Kristen, I’ve read all of your books and love them all. (I also find myself smiling and laughing without realizing it)I am going to miss Kate when this is over.
Most annoying. The eBook version of “Dark and Stormy Knights” is actually MORE expensive than the print version! Have publishers lost their minds? I wouldn’t mind nearly as much if I thought the authors were actually reaping the windfall. But I know the publishers are the ones most likely benefiting from the extra cash flow that result when they don’t actually have to print a product.
Chris, the original price of the book was $14.99. It came out in trade paperback. The e-book price was $9.99, which is five bucks cheaper. Amazon has discounted it – I’m not sure why – but #1499 to $9.99 is pretty much standard. You are paying for Butcher’s name.
I brought the books to college with me and lent them to some of my friends. I now have 3 other people who love these books! So excited for Magic Slays, and Hexed looks pretty amazing!
Why is hex being published later than magic slays?
Hexed is an anthology, while Magic Slays is a novel in the series. You can read them in whatever order you choose. There are no spoilers.
Thanks! I can’t beleive I didn’t notice that about Kate books. 3 more to look forward to!
Then a new series, with new characters in the future
[...] Well, aside from the fact that Ilona Andrews rocks, and their Kate Daniels “Magic” series is total awesomeness, I’d buy this book solely based on the trailer because it slayed me [...]
