Green Coffee
Come along to the next Green Coffee morning - on Tuesday 1st Nov from 9.30-11 at Piaf on Wimbledon Hill Road, opposite Wimbledon library. If you are interested in making Wimbledon a more sustainable and connected place, then this is the place to get together, have a chat and share ideas. You don't have to belong to any group to join in - you just have to be.
Meet up with people from groups across the borough, like Merton Cycling Campaign, Sustainable Merton, Wandle LETS, South London Biz, Transition Town Wimbledon, Merton Tree Wardens, Merton Freegle, Apostles Residents’ Association, Wimbledon Park Residents’ Association, Holy Trinity Green Group, Hillside Safer Neighbourhoods, the WP Wandle Group.
Green Coffee is held on the first Tuesday of each month - same place, same time. Everyone is welcome.
P.S If you can't do daytimes, then come along to Green Drinks- second Wednesdays
Prince of Wales pub, 98 Morden Road, 8 til late.
The Food Group
Come and help us with our plans to set up two community gardens, plant fruit and nut trees around Wimbledon, plan fruit pressing events, seed planting demos, films etc. Or just come and have a drink and a chat and let us know your ideas!
Transition Town Wimbledon's Food Group has its own page on Project Dirt, as well as its own website - this gives up-to-date information such as where to buy local food and what to plant now. For information on the next Food Group Meeting - see Wimbledon Food Group on Project Dirt
What is a Transition Town?
The Transition Town model follows 12 steps. (See Transition Network for more information) We're currently on steps 2 and 3:
1. Set up a steering group
2. Awareness raising - This stage will identify the key allies, build crucial networks and prepare the community in general for the launch of your Transition initiative - films, talks, articles, presentations in exciting groups are great resources!
3. Lay the foundations - This stage is about networking with existing groups and activists, making clear to them that the Transition Town initiative is designed to incorporate their previous efforts and future inputs by looking at the future in a new way.
4. Organise a Great Unleashing
5. Form sub groups
6. Use Open Space
7. Develop visible practical manifestations of the project
8. Facilitate the Great Reskilling
9. Build a bridge to Local Government
10. Honour the elders
11. Let it go where it wants to go...
12. Create an Energy Descent Plan

I would be interested to help lobby my local MP Justine Greening, would anyone else like to join me?
I would be interested to try to arrange a meeting with the local MP next Friday (5th) - can anyone come? It would be good to get a few people so we can show there's support,
Thanks, Helena
Can I ask you to include this in your next Newsletter or email it to your members to allow your group to consider these proposals, which were developed in response to a discussion about food and the urban/rural split at the last Transition Conference. Perhaps you could place the Big Barn link on your directory as well.
You will be aware that a) organically reared, grass fed cattle produce 60% less methane than grain fed cattle, b) we use exclusively carbon neutral transport: home made bio-diesel from waste oil, c) cattle and sheep eat grass, which we cannot and some areas are only suitable for growing grass, not cereals or vegetables.
Thanks
Paul

Field Power Organics - carbon neutral farm produce and delivery
Launching Field Power Organics carbon busters
Organic beef & lamb boxes delivered to London addresses once per month (last Wednesday of each month) by carbon neutral transport. Native grass-fed rare breeds: Red Ruby cattle, Wiltshire Horn sheep, carbon neutral farm, where all energy comes from renewable sources. Fresh organic beef boxes, all cuts: 10kg, 15kg or 30kg, fresh organic lamb boxes: half a lamb (about 9-10kg) or whole lamb (18-20kg) that don't cost the Earth. Order on-line: www.stores.ebay.co.uk/Cottage-Farm-Shop More information at www.TransitionNC.org (click on Food Directory/Cottage Farm) or at Big Barn on www.bigbarn.co.uk/marketplace/vendors/Fieldpower. We find that quite a few people find it convenient to share a box. And btw, our prices are lower than supermarkets' prices for chemical meat.
Enough said ... read all about it ... and join in !
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are contacting other organic farmers and Transition groups in our locality with a view to extend our monthly carbon free deliveries to London and distribution to individual addresses and/or distribution points.
All within our new Transition Twinning concept of farming partnerships between rural and urban Transition Groups for food supply, home swaps for holidays, working holidays on farms, ideas and enthusiasm sharing, etc, etc. We hope this will develop into a realistic, low cost, zero carbon food conveyor from rural to urban areas, as well as many other forms of co-operation.
Recently I have presented our journey from non-farmers to one of the first organic carbon-neutral beef & lamb farms at The Royal Agricultural College and also at the last Transition Movement's International conference. I would be very happy to combine our next delivery on 25th August (or later deliveries) with a talk/ presentation at a suitable event. Just let me know if you are interested.
Good luck
Paul

With the General Election just one week away, we wanted to share some research we’ve been carrying out with local political parties. We had lots of questions for them but kindly restricted ourselves to the 3 below:
• There are over 813 people in Wimbledon in a waiting list for an allotment. What will you do to help people who want access to land for growing fruit and vegetables?
• Will Merton Council give priority to pedestrians and cyclists in transport planning and street management? In particular will the council adopt a 20mph default speed limit across Wimbledon to encourage more people to cycle and reduce carbon emissions?
• Will Merton Council ensure that, if energy performance assessment of buildings is contracted out, buildings are reliably assessed? (Contractor companies rarely fail buildings for fear of losing business, resulting in unreliable assessments.)
You can see all the responses on this page, or view them individually using the links below. We’re hoping to have the Conservative Party’s response available tomorrow:
Green Party
Labour Party
Liberal Democrat Party
You can also get in-depth analysis of the main parties’ manifestos from the ENDS Report
Forthcoming events we’ll be involved with include:
• On Saturday 15th May, 11am-3pm, we’ll have a stall at the Fete of the Earth in the Community Centre, St George’s Road, SW19. Organised by Wimbledon Disarmament Coaliton / United Nations Association, attractions include a plant sale, books, bric-a-brac, refreshments, home produce, a raffle and other green groups.
• On Monday 17th May, 7:30pm, our Food Group will be holding a follow-up meeting at the Alexandra Pub, 33 Wimbledon Hill. For more information, please email susanna.riviere@googlemail.com.
• On the weekend of 5th/6th June, 11am-4pm, some of us will accompany Sustainable Merton at the Wandle Valley Festival in Morden Hall Park.
• Sadly, we were unable to get a stall at the Wimbledon Village Fair.
Below are other local activities worth being aware of:
• Until this Saturday 1st May, Gaia Theatre Collective will be presenting Tipping Point at the New Wimbledon Studio Theatre.
• Wimbledon Farmers’ Market celebrates its 10th anniversary in May and has organised some special events for this Saturday 1st May (Morris Dancing) and Saturday 8th May (Birthday Bash with free cake and music, Punch and Judy shows, a hog roast, and paintings from the artist in residence).
• On Sunday 30th and Monday 31st May, 11am-5pm, Deen City Farm will be building a new eco-roof, made from recycled drinks bottles.
Don’t forget, this is your Transition Town and we would value your ideas, thoughts and suggestions for future groups and activities.
Many thanks for your time,
Gavin
I’d just like to remind you that we’ll be at the Piazza in Wimbledon Town Centre this Saturday 20th March, with our Re-thinking Wimbledon event. We’ll be there 10:30am-3:30pm, highlighting what’s already happening and what else we could do to improve local resilience and sustainability. You can try our carbon calculator, get tips about reducing your carbon footprint, visit our book stall, find out about our food and energy groups, plus much more. Other organisations attending include:
• Sustainable Merton
• Merton Cycling Campaign
• Kingston & Merton Real Nappy Network
• Merton Freegle
• Merton United Nations Association
• Global Fusion (www.globalfusion.co.uk/)
There will also be some nature activities and live music during the day.
Hope to see you there,
Gavin
