Curtain lining workshop Saturday 26th November 2 - 6 pm

 Following Transition Leytonstone’s successful and highly enjoyable curtain lining workshop in May, we are running a second session. Come and line a pair of curtains, with expert tuition from Jan Ashford.

Premium quality lining material will be available to buy:

Thermal  blackout lining (for bedrooms): £3.75/meter

Thermal lining:  £2.80/meter

You will need to bring your own curtains, and matching thread. If you have scissors please bring them, although some pairs will be provided.

Please book, as we need to make sure we have enough sewing machines and space!

Transition Walthamstow has formed

Transition Walthamstow met for the first time on Fri 21st Oct 2011, with a lively debate and impressive range of ideas bringing to life our vision for Walthamstow in 2026.

The next meeting is at 7pm on Fri 4th Nov at the Hornbeam Centre; all welcome.

This is a follow-up event to the ‘Century of Challenges’ talk on September 2nd, in which respected energy expert and financial blogger Stoneleigh (a.k.a. Nicole Foss) gave a hard-hitting presentation on the outlook for the world economy and a close examination of the role of the energy markets.

How can we strengthen the local economy?
How can we make a living?
How can we keep our money safe?

We don’t have all the answers, but we’d like to start asking questions. This is an event aiming to explore some ways of working towards economic security for ourselves and our community.

Come along and find out about local networks and organisations which can help you save, borrow, or develop a small business or project idea. Join in some brainstorming discussions with Waltham Forest Community Credit Union, Waltham Forest LETS, Hornbeam Environmental Centre, HEET Project, Cygnus Trust.

If business as usual is not an option, let’s think outside the box!

A Lark in the Pastures 24th September

Food to share: We are having a barbecue, but if you are able to bring a salad, or a rice dish, bread, to accompany the barbecue that would be great. Please let me know if you can.

A Lark without waste: We’d like to ‘walk the talk’ and reduce waste at this event. If at all possible please bring your own plate, knife and fork, and maybe a mug as well.

Spread the word about local groups: We will have a stall for leaflets about local community groups, such as residents’ associations. If you belong to a group, please bring leaflets.

The more help the better: Many thanks to all the people who’ve offered to help. Even more hands would make light work - and it will be fun. If you’d like to work the apple press, serve tea, help with the barbecue, help out on the stalls, help clear up, please let me know.

King’s Passage Triangle

Waltham Forest Council have given permission for Transition Leytonstone to develop and improve the triangle of land on the corner of Wallwood Road and King’s Passage, and have helped us to get some funding from Groundwork to work with the local community to carry out the work. The funding is through the Transform programme, inspired by the 2012 Olympics.

We plan to talk to as many residents who live near the site as possible, as well as to those who work at or use the nearby nursery and people who walk past the site every day. Children play on the grass, walk on the wall (which does need mending), and should continue to enjoy the site. We’d like to include some food growing, perhaps fruit, nuts, herbs…It’s going to be important, and exciting, to involve local people both in making plans for the site, and in the planting and maintenance.

If you live near the site, please tell your neighbours about the project.

There will be a preliminary meeting to look at the site and discuss plans for the project, and to meet a representative each from Waltham Forest Council and Groundwork, who are supporting us:

Leytonstone Green Drinks - 15th of each month

They do it in Reykjavik, Santiago and Addis Ababa. Closer at hand, they do it in Balham, Hackney and Walthamstow.

So let’s do it in Leytonstone! Green Drinks is a chance for anyone interested in issues related to environmental sustainability and social justice, to get together with others once a month, over a drink. We’ll meet on 15th of each month, at the newly re-opened Red Lion in Leytonstone, from 8 pm.

Waltham Forest Green Drinks, in the Rose and Crown, is on 1st of each month, and this way we can go to both!

Community Local Produce Stall: every Saturday

In partnership with Organiclea, we launched our Community Local Produce Stall on Saturday 16th July.

Selling local fruit and veg every Saturday 10am - 3.30pm, it is located just off the High Road behind St John’s Church.

If you would like to help on the stall, either on a regular basis or just now and again, please contact Ros Bedlow (rosbedlow[at]hotmail.com or 0208 556 0885). Please let her know which Saturdays you’d like to help, over the next couple of months, and whether you’d like to do a whole session (10 am - 3.30 pm) or a half session of about 3 hours. Also please let her know if you could help distribute fliers.

Fruit and Veg stall for Leytonstone

After the showing of ‘A Farm for the Future’ in March, we announced that we are working with Organiclea and the Hornbeam Centre to start a stall selling locally grown, organic fruit and vegetables and other produce. Well, it’s happening! St. John’s Church have offered us a site, and we hope the stall will open at the beginning of July. It will make fresh local produce available to people in Leytonstone, and there will also be the opportunity to sell other locally produced food such as jams, bread, and surplus fruit and veg grown by local people.

If you’d like to help make this happen by volunteering on the stall, contributing ideas, publicity… .or if you’re just interested, please come to a meeting and see the site:
