1500 CHILDREN LEARN TO RESPECT DOGS

On last January 16th an educational programme aimed at the children attending elementary schools in Medgidia has been launched. Thanks to an Italian foundation’s financial contribution, STD has been able to train and employ a part-time teacher in charge of the lessons. Alexandra (here depicted with her students) took part to a training course organised by the English dog welfare charity Dogs Trust, and then tailored the contents to the specific Romanian framework. The international organization WSPA provided us with a free layout for printed didactic materials, while the stuffed animals that are given the children have been generously offered by the Italian supporters.

The purpose of the programme – which foresees 4 hours of lessons each class within January and June 2012 – is teaching the children to be conscientious masters of their own dogs, recognizing their needs and respecting them as sentient creatures. During the lectures, Alexandra discusses about straying and birth control, animal welfare and STD’s tasks in the country. Several children have succeeded in convincing their parents of sterilizing their own pet, and our trainer is surrounded with enthusiasm. All the schools in Medgidia have joined the initiative except the Muslim school, although we hope to persuade the relevant school principal soon. At the moment the project is financed for 6 months, however we would like to go on involving Cernavoda’s schools. For the summer we have foreseen a range of outdoor activities, such as visiting our mobile clinic, which may be parked in schools’ courtyards, and STD’s sterilization centre.

We strongly believe that among the desks that we involve today there are the volunteers of tomorrow, those who will promote change in these towns which are still culturally backwards but enclose a high potential in future generations. On this potential STD intends to invest its future. To check all the pictures please click here. See below the short reportage (in Romanian) made by local broadcast Alphamedia:

You can give your contribution to the educational programme
by means of the usual terms of payment on STD’s account.

DOG-CATCHERS ARE BACK IN CERNAVODA

No comments · Posted by Info in NEWS

The dog-catchers have returned to Cernavoda. Last Thursday they have caught many stray dogs, while the local police has protected them from the citizens’ protests.  Also Save the Dogs workers who have rushed to the location and took pictures of the new catchings.
The strategy is like always: indulge public opinion which is favorable to dog-catching to allow the Mayor to be reelected in the next council elections.
The work of Save the Dogs of the past ten years is subject to a new hard blow and hundreds of dogs will be locked up and killed in the killing-pound of Costanza. These dogs are peaceful, well-groomed, sterilized by Save the Dogs and identified by a colorful tag on the ear which is completely visible. The Mayor of Cernavoda wants to therefore show that they are capable of intervening in a situation of straying which in any case has already been reduced to the minimum through the work by our association.
As soon as we heard the news of what was happening on the streets, we took action to block the sterilizations and opened the doors of the shelter to all the dogs that we were able to take in. Although our structure is overcrowded, we cannot allow any of them to be released on the territory for a long time. Unfortunately, the action by the town administration is in perfect continuity with what has already happened in the past, when Save the Dogs brought to light the dog-pound situation of Costanza and took steps to report the company, Alfmob, who are commissioned to carry out the captures. The affair caused uproar both in Romanian public opinion as well as internationally and with regard to the issue, the Foreign Minister at the time Franco Frattini intervened in a determined manner.

In spite of the condemnations and stance, nothing seems to have changed since then and it appears that an average of 600 dogs are wiped out each month in that circle of hell, thanks to a complaisant doctor that declares that all the dogs are “incurably ill”.
In many occasions we have been able to notice that society’s mobilization can produce its results if seriously conducted and directed. For this, we ask you to pressure the Town of Cernavoda asking them to immediately end the captures (once again contracted out to Alfmob) and remind the administration of the city of Law 9/2008 which in fact, in Romania does not allow the killings. You can send your protests using the text that you can find HERE to the town emails: primaria@cernavoda.ro and primaria.cernavoda@yahoo.com or by fax 0040241239578 and 0040241487124.

Thanks for your help.

GOOD-BYE MINI

When we saved him from his owners in the quarter of « Tabara » in Cernavoda, our Mini was only 5 months. Having lost his mother, who probably died of hardship, soon after his birth, Mini, had developed a serious form of rickets. Once he was taken to the Save the Dogs shelter, the colt appeared seriously dehydrated and undernourished, but the following weeks he had responded to the fortifying treatment and seemed to be getting better. However, a few days ago, the situation suddenly precipitated. After a night on a drip and a large meal of carrots the morning after, Mini died around 11.00 without notice, leaving a feeling of emptiness among the Save the Dogs employees who had taken care of him.

Our association predominantly looks after dogs but Mini’s case offers us the opportunity to speak about another category of animals that live in extreme painful conditions in Romania: they are the equines – horses and donkeys – that are used like work machines to the extreme limit of their forces.

Save the Dogs have been taking care of them for quite a while (our shelter of Cernavoda donkeys is the only refuge of this kind in all Eastern Europe).  However, lately we have further increased our efforts to help an increasing number of animals. In fact, because of ignorance or extreme indigence by their owners, these animals are not guaranteed food and the minimum veterinary treatment and are exposed to sweltering summer heat or extreme cold during winter. Our resources are limited but we hope that Mini’s and Eugenia’s experiences sensitize supporters and allow us to collect the necessary resources to create a new stable capable of  holding more horses that are mistreated, in addition to those already dependent on  Save the Dogs. The stable will be dedicated to Mini, victim of misery and ignorance.

We would like to thank all our supporters for the affection and the extraordinary solidarity shown towards little Mini.

In order to contribute to the creation of a new stable, it is possible to make a donation on Save the Dogs’ account stating as reason for payment: “Stable Mini”.

SAVED FROM STARVING, SABINA NOW LIVES IN SWEDEN AND IS HAPPY

Sabina used to live in the courtyard of a company in Medgidia; the workers used to feed and take care of her and other stray dogs. After attending to her sterilization, we came to the decision of entrusting her to those who had looked after her till then. Things changed drastically when, out of the blue, the owner of the company forbade his personnel to feed her and the other dogs living in the area. When our staff arrived there for carrying out an inspection, Sabina was so weak and underfed that she was about starving. Though our refuge was overloaded, we decided to hold her and give her a strong restorative treatment; to this end, we also asked for our supporters’ cooperation. Sabina’s conditions were dreadful.

Currently, thanks to our therapy and to the supporters’ help, Sabina has completely recovered and has been adopted in Sweden, where she lives with a brand new family! At the following link you will see her playing and running with her new friend Ben. Another happy end thanks to Save the Dogs and its followers!
