Col. Michael Mullane (USAF, Ret.)
Former NASA Astronaut
Countdown to Teamwork:
Guarding Against
“Normalization of Deviance” |
In this inspirational and thought-provoking address, Col. Mullane—a Vietnam combat pilot and veteran of 3 space shuttle missions—stresses the importance of teamwork to completing a complex objective, whether it is a flight into outer space or the successful commissioning of a modern building.
In particular, Mullane uses the cautionary tale of the Challenger tragedy to stress the importance of avoiding the "normalization of deviance": gradually accepting a lower standard of performance (whether due to budget, schedule, or other reasons) until it becomes the norm. Col. Mullane’s message will resonate with commissioning providers, who are constantly challenged to insist on quality in the name of the building owner despite competing outside forces. And you’ll come away with a renewed sense of your own potential and the potential of the teams you are part of. |

Building Envelope Commissioning and Diagnostic Testing |
Darren Draper, P.E., & Khalil Dehghanian Epsten Group, Inc. |
Building envelope systems have long been undervalued despite their role in long-term building performance. To evaluate and improve envelope performance, it is critical to understand both envelope Cx, and envelope diagnostics for existing buildings. For existing buildings, some of the diagnostics discussed will include non-destructive field testing, infrared thermography, and moisture intrusion testing. |

Energy Modeling Applications for Existing Buildings |
Clark Denson, P.E., CEM, LEED AP, BEMP
SSRCx, Sustainable Solutions Group |
Using computer simulations for modeling building energy performance is a valuable tool for decision-making, whether it is used during the pre-schematic design phase of a new construction project or for potential retrofits of existing buildings. This presentation will go into depth on how energy modeling can be used throughout the life of a building, particularly how it can be applied to the continuous improvement of existing buildings. |

Integrating testing and balancing as a key commissioning deliverable makes good business sense for building owners, T&B agencies and commissioning providers. Procuring an independent T&B agency as a component of professional commissioning services allows for the selection of the best professional for the job, and promotes a united front of owner advocacy with an unbiased systems approach to commissioning |

Verifying System Cleanliness: A Guide for Commissioning Providers |
Bill Lundquist, ASCS
Monster Vac, Inc.
Past President, National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) |
Whether in new or existing buildings, there is growing awareness that HVAC systems must be verified clean before a project is turned over to a building owner—for both air quality and energy reasons. But how do you determine when systems need attention? And how clean is “clean”? This presentation provides the answers, as well as the commissioning provider’s role in proper verification. |
