Collections & Archives

Material history and heritage documents are the portal to the past for any heritage institution. These items are what is studied and interpreted to make the past come alive. At the same time, they are also the anchor which lends credibility to the stories we tell.

You may also be interested in the services of the Museum Collections or Archives staff because you are working on a project of your own or because you have a contribution to make to our collections. We welcome you to take the e-route to find out more about this exciting part of Grey Roots on our website.

The artefact collection at Grey Roots is composed of a diverse group of objects, and reflects the history of Grey County from pre-contact until present day. Artefacts that are not currently on exhibit are stored in environmentally-controlled storage areas. Individual artefacts are stored in acid-free, chemically inert material and in a manner that best supports the specific requirements of the item.

The Archives is now home to over 500 collections which compose 3,600 linear feet of material. Each collection is accessioned, inventoried, entered into our database, cleaned and rehoused. We also aim to make our collections further accessible through finding aids and endeavour for them to contribute to exhibit preparation and, from time to time, be objects of exhibition as well.
