Help your neighbors this winter!

This year will be the 7th Annual Wheels for Warmth aid program for Central Vermont residents on fixed incomes and with limited resources for home heating fuel. This program, created by Lt. Governor Phil Scott, has generated nearly $100,000 in six years, and continues to grow.

All proceeds from this unique program go to the fuel assistance program. With heating costs on the rise many of our neighbors, including young families and seniors, face real health, safety, and financial survival concerns this winter. They truly need our help.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS

Folks who wish to help out can donate tires they no longer need after meeting state inspection standards. These tires are sold for a maximum of $15.00 each. It's a life saver for many families needing tires that can't put together the money for new tires. All sale proceeds support the Central Vermont Community Action Council's emergency and supplemental fuel assistance program.

Tires that don't meet state inspection standards come off our highways and for $4.00 each go in the Casella Waste Management tire collection units on sight. Casella will turn over 100% of this money to the home heating program.

DOES IT WORK?

You bet! Over the last six years, nearly $100,000 has been generated through this citizen supported program. Recycling, tire sales to folks who need help and fuel assistance for those that need it the most.

Senator Phil Scott's Wheels for Warmth Program Receives Award for Environmental Excellence and Pollution Prevention

Senator Phil Scott, R – Washington County, announced that the Wheels for Warmth program has been selected as a recipient for the 2010 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence.

"I couldn't be happier that Wheels for Warmth has been recognized as a leader in protecting Vermont's environment. 'Wheels' never would have worked if there hadn't been cooperation from CVCAC, Casella Waste Management, WDEV and the many individuals who have volunteered their time over the years. This program has been successful on many different levels … receiving a nod from the Agency of Natural Resources and Governor Douglas is just icing on the cake," said Senator Scott.

Senator Scott, a candidate for Lieutenant Governor, created Wheels for Warmth in 2005 to raise funds for the Central Vermont Community Action Council's emergency and supplemental fuel assistance program. To date, volunteers and community members have raised nearly $100,000. In addition raising funds for Central Vermonters in need, the program also prevents unwanted tires from ending up in our landfills, in our rivers or along roadsides. Wheels for Warmth accept donated tires individuals no longer need. Tires are then inspected by the Vermont Dept. of Motor Vehicles and sold for a maximum of $15.00 each. Tires that don't meet state inspection standards come off our highways and for $4.00 are recycled through Casella Waste Management. In 2009, Casella generously donated 100% of these funds to the home heating program. Over 9,000 tires have been recycled and another 6,000 tires have seen extended use since the program's inception.

The Vermont Governor's Awards for Environmental Excellence were established in 1993 to honor Vermont individuals, organizations, institutions, public agencies, businesses, and industry using innovative approaches that reduce or eliminate the generation of pollutants and wastes at the source. Categories have been expanded since then to include other environmental leaders. To date, more than 100 award-winning efforts have been recognized.

A member of the Vermont Senate representing Washington County since 2000, Senator Scott currently serves as chair of the Institutions Committee and vice chair of the Transportation Committee. Scott was born in Barre, Vermont and is a graduate of Spaulding High School and the University of Vermont. Scott is a co-owner of DuBois Construction Inc. in Middlesex, and is also known as the "Flying Senator" to racing fans of Barre's Thunder Road International Speedbowl, where he races Thursday nights throughout the summer.
