About Us

Established in 1973, when child abuse was a crime so unspeakable Americans did not speak of it at all, Casa de los Niños was among the first crisis nurseries in the United States. Founded by Sister Kathleen Clark, the first nursery was small. The vision was so darned big, however, that Casa de los Niños soon became the pride of Tucson.

Tucsonans stepped forward as volunteers to help care for the kids in the nursery. They brought diapers and blankets and toys. They offered their help, financially.

And like a small child who thrives when nurtured by caring parents, Casa de los Niños “grew like a weed!” Today, a wide variety of programs touch the lives of more than 2,000 children a year. The Crisis Shelter remains at the heart of the program, but other programs are now aimed at preventing child abuse and caring for kids who have already been abused or neglected.

For 35 years, our strength has been our ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment. But one thing has never changed. At Casa de los Niños, it’s all about the kids. Every day of the year!
