Biological Building Agents |
A clear pond doesn't necessarily mean that it's a healthy one. This is one of the biggest misconceptions that folks have about ponds. They think just because the water is pretty and clear that it must be healthy. A beautiful, clear pond can be reeking of ammonia and nitrites or the pH might have just crashed and killed all your fish. A healthy pond is one that has a functioning active biological filter filled with healthy nitrifying bacteria. It is clean (well, as far as ponds go...) and free of excessive muck -- areas where bad bacteria breed. The water circulates well and there are no dead spots of stagnant water. There is no sign of ammonia or nitrites and the pH is stable and between 7.0 and 8.0. The water is well aerated and dissolved oxygen is plentiful. One of the things we do is use and test the products we sell. We won't sell anything that doesn't have a purpose (in other words a waste of money) or is bad for the pond environment. We do NOT believe manufacturer's claims because what the label says is so often far removed from the truth - and there's no one to regulate it. Many products claim to "provide instant nitrifying bacteria" but we've not really seen where they've been able to "bottle" live nitrifying bacteria. What these products actually do is help set the stage for nitrifying bacteria to grow. Check out our Product Profiles for the skinny on many of the bacteria building agents out there on the market. It's important that you know the basics of the nitrifying cycle. Here are a few good articles that should help you out with learning the nitrifying cycle and how to create a healthy koi pond or water garden environment: [../../../Topics/WaterQualityArticlesList.htm] |

Below you'll find products that help build the necessary biological filtration needed for a healthy pond ecology...
Biological Filters |
Don't believe anyone who says a koi or goldfish pond does not need a filter. They've obviously not managed one or "expect" fish to die. Biological Filters provide housing for necessary nitrifying bacteria. A submersed filter is only good for very small ponds (under 300 gallons). Anything over 1000 gallons is perfect for bead-style filtration that helps colonize nitrifying bacteria while giving you low-maintenance operation. |

Chemical Bio-Building Agents |
These products are not exactly nitrifying bacteria in a bottle but they do help to create the right environment so that anaerobic (good) bacteria can grow and colonize in the biological filter. Use these in the first of spring when the bacteria is just beginning to grow for the season, whenever you install a new biological filter or whenever your pond water tests positive for any amount of ammonia or nitrites. |

Test Kits and pH Stabilizers | Sometimes the only physical clue we get that our ponds are unhealthy is dead or sick fish. You cannot "see" poor water parameters. Always have a test kit for ammonia, nitrites and pH handy. We like to use only these drop tests because they work well with Ultimate Water Conditioner (ammonia detoxifier) and they are much more accurate than test strips. pH crashes (when the pH suddenly plummets) will kill the fish and the tender nitrifying bacteria in your biological filter. Prevent crashes simply by adding pH Stabilizer NOW.

Ammonia Detoxifiers | Nothing can take the place of water changes when your pond has ammonia or nitrites but you can prolong the time in-between changes by using ammonia detoxifiers. Both these detoxifiers double as de-chlorinators too so you can use them instead of regular de-chlorinator. Use detoxifiers whenever you get readings of ammonia in your pond water.
