Welcome to the Square Enix Music Archive

UPDATE: Square Enix Music Online's redesign is still in progress and will be released before the end of the year. The combined effects of university workload and staff temporary absence has delayed things much longer than expected. We're now in the final stage, finalising a few more pages and adding the sheet music section, though this is time-consuming despite the sheer bulk of things having already been completed. Please be aware that Square Music News is still being regularly updated, we have a Best Song Contest going on in our forum, and a new Square Enix Music Online - SquareSound collaboration radio released within the fortnight. We've got a few special articles in progress to bridge the gap and we may also release our long-anticipated Koichi Sugiyama / Dragon Quest content early for enthusiasts out there. SEMO is going to be great and, if you want to contribute, this thread may be of interest. Thank you for your patience and ongoing support. The wait will be worth it!

At present, this site is a fully functional temporary archive of SquareSound (v.2) intended to bridge the gap between the release of the latest version of SquareSound and the August release of the full version of the new site to be hosted on this server, Square Enix Music Online. This new site will be the biggest and finest international Final Fantasy and Square Enix music resource on the net, run by me, Chris, and a large team of dedicated staff members. This is the start of a new era but the continuation of a long-term inspiration.

As those that visited SquareSound will know, the site was split because of diverging aims between the webmasters there. With my creation of fairly extensive non-mainstream coverage and Tim's establishment of a store that only he would profit from, long-term conflict was inevitable. We eventually agreed that it was best to split the sites so that both of our aims would be fulfilled. Though this resolution is saddening in many ways, it will not hinder the quality of the overall Square Enix music coverage available in the long-term.

My basic aim for the new site will be to create a regularly updated and rigorously maintained non-profit site that provides the most definitive coverage of Square Enix musicians and albums while raising awareness of the variety of game music projects in general out there. The site will be unparalleled by any preceding it in terms of both quality and quantity of content and resources available and will carefully balance a large focus on mainstream music such as from the Final Fantasy series with lots of coverage of less well-known music around the edges.

What to Expect on the New Site

- Highly accurate track listings, complete production credits, and a large compendium of well-written reviews for all Square, Enix, and Square Enix albums and concerts, including complete coverage of the music from the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Chrono, Xeno, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Front Mission, SaGa, Mana, Drakengard, and Kingdom Hearts series.

- A wide variety of official sheet music scans, MIDIs, fan arrangements, and song lyrics for a range of popular albums; the continuation of the Weekly MP3s, the introduction of a download scheme for rare out-of-print albums and game rips, and the addition of over 2000 rigorously selected MP3 samples for our covered albums.

- Introduction of coverage for all popular Square Enix vocalists and establishment of composer coverage as a focal point of the site with the release of much more refined and user-friendly coverage, set to feature completely rewritten biographies, interactive photo albums, additional interviews, and much more.

- Unparalleled complete coverage of Koji Kondo (Mario, Zelda, Star Fox 64), Koichi Sugiyama (Dragon Quest), Noriyuki Iwadare (Grandia, Lunar, True Love Story, Radiata Stories), Yuzo Koshiro (ActRaiser, Shenmue, Streets of Rage, Ys, Sorcerian), and Hayato Matsuo (Ogre series, Dragon Force II, Panzer Dragoon, Final Fantasy XII).

- A variety of features intended to improve the accessibility and usability of the site, including a fresh new design intended to maximimise aesthetic appeal, a layout that includes left-hand navigation, and a brand new forum with an in-built chatroom to get the old community spirit going.

- Other goodies, including a fan-arranged albums section, an interactive calendar for album releases and upcoming concerts, the continuation of a regularly updated Music News service, and the establishment of a shared radio station with SquareSound set to feature even more tracks than the current SquareSound Radio.

- The entirety of the staff team from SquareSound, excluding the site's current webmaster Tim, will principally contribute to this site. We are also proud to introduce Black Mamba, Locke, Moses Rose, Jared, and Resk on to staff. If you wish to join staff, click here.

For site news and to participate in the community, be sure to check out the forum where an active community is quickly forming. I hope you find this archive useful and will continue to visit the site in addition to the current SquareSound. The upcoming Square Enix Music Online is set to be great and is guaranteed worthy of attention for any Square Enix music fan, so keep your eyes peeled till August!
