Amazing Lansky on Bridge

by David Hurwitz

spacer

Paul Lansky is best known as a successful and innovative creator of electronic music, and I say this as someone who normally detests that particular medium. If he can write masterpieces using computers, just imagine what he can do with real instruments and “carbon-based life forms,” as ... Continue Reading

Hummel Concert Extravaganzas

by David Hurwitz

spacer

This program is simply delicious. Who knew that Hummel wrote a series of variations on the tune “O du lieber Augustin,” complete with an episode in the spiciest Turkish manner (click on the sound sample below). If it doesn’t amuse you, then stick to Pfitzner. L’Enchantment d&... Continue Reading

Nielsen & Sibelius–A Winning Odd Couple

by Victor Carr Jr

Okko Kamu leads a refreshingly vibrant account of Nielsen’s Symphony No. 1. The first movement surges with youthful vigor, aided by Kamu’s light touch–crisp orchestral articulation and clear ensemble textures. The Andante second movement plays with a rare sense of direction–K... Continue Reading

Remarkable Mahler 3rd from Honeck and Pittsburgh

by David Hurwitz

spacer

This is a remarkable live performance of a very difficult symphony. Manfred Honeck is a real conductor, and by that I mean he has both ideas that make musical sense and the talent to pull them off. This is evident from the very first bars of the symphony. Let’s just focus on three factors that... Continue Reading

Quick Copland from Seattle

by David Hurwitz

spacer

These are speedy, rhythmic performances of two of Aaron Copland’s three most famous ballets, and it’s actually a good idea to replace the usual Appalachian Spring with an interesting, worthy, yet neglected piece like the Piano Concerto. This latter work also receives the best performance... Continue Reading

Mischa Elman: The 1961 BBC Recitals

by Jed Distler

spacer

These two newly released Mischa Elman BBC recitals from 1961 complement Testament’s earlier box devoted to the great Romantic violinist’s complete Decca recordings. They generally preserve Elman’s late-period artistry in fine form, and in good mono sound, for that matter. Beethoven’s “... Continue Reading

Litton’s Firebird Really Smokes

by David Hurwitz

Andrew Litton's previous disc of Petrushka and The Rite of Spring was sensational, and this Firebird is just as fine. Timing out at about 47 minutes, you might think the tempos somewhat slow, but they're not, or at least they never sound so. The Infernal Dance is brilliantly played, with exciting, hard-hitting rhythms. Indeed, Litton's control of rhythm, allied to remarkably clear textures even in the most thickly scored passages, is what keeps the music flowing effortlessly, even in those grott...
