Each month Legalize Trans* spotlight an individual or organization doing--or being--something remarkable. Spotlight recipients are featured on our website, promoted on our Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr, and receive a free Legalize Trans* shirt. If they're raising money, we'll try to contribute something and invite you to join us too!
Andrea "Andy" Cofino is a spoken word poet/artist-activist from Mamaroneck, NY. She earned a BA in English and Women's and Gender Studies from Pace University and is currently a Masters candidate at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Andy performs her original poetry at universities, high schools, cafes, and conferences on issues related to sexuality, gender identity, queer history, homophobia and transphobia.
Andy is currently producing a Tri-State area high school/college tour of her full-length play, OUT IN THE OPEN: Stories of Queer Oppression and Empowerment. The show highlights important moments in queer history while presenting real people's stories of homophobia and transphobia in the form of spoken word monologues. All poetry is based on 91 interviews she conducted with folks from a multitude of different races, genders, sexualities, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds.
