Invitational Letter from the Program Planning Committee

Dear AAPC Membership,

Our excitement is growing as we finalize our plans for the 48th Annual AAPC Conference at the National Conference Center in Leesburg, Virginia. Our theme, Construction & Collaboration: Pathways to the Future,” is indicative of many emerging pathways in our collective journey as an association.

Many are aware of the changing organizational and membership structures that promise to open new avenues for a wide diversity of professionals to engage in the work and mission of AAPC. We anticipate these changes bringing us into closer proximity not only with other therapists and counselors, but also with healthcare professionals, pastors, physicians, community organizers, and other social and human service professionals. As one emerging pathway to the future of AAPC, we imagine collaborative relationships with this diversity of professionals will enrich our work as pastoral counselors and spark new visions for how we carry out the mission of AAPC.

We are also happy to be planning a conference that invites the association to engage the leading edges of theory and practice in counseling and psychotherapy. Among our clinical offerings, we are including a selection of workshops that will engage social constructionist thought that is at the cutting edge of theory in the social sciences. Introductory workshops will offer attendees the opportunity to enter conversation for the first time around social constructionist thought and postmodern therapies, while others will find more advanced offerings for the furthering of the theory and practice of counseling and psychotherapy.

Our plenary speakers bring a wealth of experience and innovative thought and stand as pioneers in their respective disciplines:

  • Rev. Pamela D. Couture, Ph.D. is the Jane and Geoffrey Martin Chair in Church & Community at Emmanuel College, Toronto, Canada. Previously having attained Fellow status in AAPC, Pamela’s work is influenced by narrative therapy and she has long worked at the intersections of the social, cultural, and economic contexts in which pastoral care and counseling operates.

  • Harlene Anderson, Ph.D. is recognized internationally as working at the leading edge of postmodern collaborative practices as a therapist, consultant, and educator. She has authored numerous books and articles and is the recipient of the prestigious 2000 Outstanding Contributions to Marriage and Family Therapy Award from AAMFT.
In both the workshop offerings and the plenary sessions, you will notice an intentionally clinical focus that will offer opportunities to enhance the practice of clinicians. In addition, we will have workshops directed explicitly toward clergy, educators, and those engaged in community settings.

Conference details will be forthcoming in the months ahead. Please keep checking the AAPC website (www.aapc.org) for updated information.

We look forward to seeing you April 19-21, 2012 in Leesburg, Virginia.

Sincerely,
Program Planning Committee
