Sram Force RD tear down Pt. 4

About time to put this thing back together!  I shaved off some of the back cage to match the new look and to save some more mass.

I had really thought that a Ti spring would save me a good amount of weight but I was wrong.  The left is the stock spring and the right is my custom Ti spring.  It was quite hard to make, ended up being the same weight, and it didn’t seem as elastic so I ditched the idea and used the stock spring.

New hardware!  The Omni pulley wheels weigh in at 18 grams as opposed to the ~28 gram stock wheels.  I’m using all M4 nylon limit screws for this application.  I’m also going with aluminum screws for the jockey wheels.

Lastly, I made a threaded insert for the cable adjuster out of this wire connector thingy.

The total weight is laughable to say the least…  this is how much a SRAM Red derailleur weighs from the factory!  I was hoping for something along the lines of 120 grams.  So lesson learned here:  buy a Sram RED.

Tall Stack Stems

I think these stems are one of the coolest ideas in awhile.  Threadless with the look of a threaded stem.  Everything fits flush and neat! So much better than before.  These are perfect for those modern retro rigs such as:

Here’s another update on the Force RD. I’m going with the organic look as I’ve mentioned before. Every unnecessary corner has been shaven down and every unnecessary panel has been drilled out. This is not to look like a “drillium” modified part but something a bit more elegant and hopefully efficient -stronger and lighter. Most of the cuts are still rough cuts and will be smoothed out later.

So what’s the weight savings for all of this work? About 10 grams saved. That’s extremely little in the scheme of a whole bike so unless you’re going for every gram, or going for the look DON’T put yourself through the trouble of shaving off material. Most of the weight is in the torsion spring mechanism that supplies torque to the jockey wheel cages and so far I haven’t found a way nor seen anyone modify this with success.
