Crime Reports

The Des Moines Police Department in cooperation with private vendor, CrimeReports.com is making available a crime mapping tool for public view and search.  Citizens may view police activity in the city based upon reported crime.  The search parameters may be city-wide, neighborhood, date range and crime type.  The interactive tool will be used to enhance the public’s knowledge about reported crime activity.  Additionally, the Police Department is hoping to enhance our partnerships with the community and is asking the public to provide the department with any information that would assist in solving crimes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CrimeReports.com? CrimeReports.com is an online mapping and analysis service provided by Public Engines, Inc., headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. CrimeReports.com combines the value of police data with the ease-of-use of Google-based mapping and an analytics module so that members of the public can view police data in a high-impact map or summary descriptive format. Members of the public may also sign up to receive free email alerts based on user-defined parameters (e.g., geography, crime types, frequency, etc.).

Does CrimeReports reduce crime? Although no formal, third-party study has been commissioned, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that public-facing crime mapping—by keeping citizens informed about crime in their area—helps them be more vigilant and implement crime prevention efforts in their homes, workplaces, and communities. In addition, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that public-facing crime mapping fosters more trust in local law enforcement by members of the community.

What type of Des Moines Police Department (DMPD) data is used in CrimeReports.com? The CrimeReports.com service uses information from actual police incident reports from DMPDs Records Management System (RMS). DMPD officers submit approximately 4,000 case reports per year, which are generated from approximately 20,000 calls for service. Members of the public may select their search parameters by date range and/or crime type.

What specific types of data from the Records Management System (RMS) are used in CrimeReports.com? Incident report data is utilized for CrimeReports.com, including the following data fields: date / time occurred, event number, and event location.

Is there a description for the Records Management System (RMS) data fields included in CrimeReports.com? Yes:
• Case Number: Electronically generated, this number catalogues crimes reported to the Police Department. The Case Number consists of a 7 digit number. In the following example case number, 09-10001, 09= year, 10001= specific case number
• Date & Time: This is the date and time that the event occurred. In the following example, 2010-02-14 19:30, the event occurred on February 14, 2010 at 7:30 PM
• Event Location: This is the 100th block address and intersection information. CrimeReports.com translates address data into block level data. This means that if an incident occurs at 123 Main Avenue South, it will show up as 100 Block Main Avenue South in the CrimeReports.com application. Some location fields will be populated with “address could not be mapped” if the data was not geo-processed accurately.

Street Number Block Translation
0 - 99  0 Block
100 - 199 100 Block
1000 - 1099 1000 Block
12000 - 12099 12000 Block

How can I use the data from CrimeReports.com in support of safety in my neighborhood and community? Data from CrimeReports.com can be reviewed and used to improve community safety. CrimeReports.com data is appropriate to consider and discuss as part of coordinated crime prevention initiatives. Members of the community are encouraged to continue partnering and problem-solving with the police department while using CrimeReports.com data toward being informed about police activity and crime in their neighborhood and city.

Is every Records Management System (RMS) incident report type included in CrimeReports.com? Not every RMS case report type is included in CrimeReports.com. The crimes that are mapped are those that members of the public request information on most frequently and would have the most interest in learning about.

Why was Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) not chosen as the data source for CrimeReports.com? CAD includes all calls for police service. A majority of Calls for Service (CFS) do not rise to the level of generating a case report and may even not be of a criminal nature or are unfounded by the responding officer. Please keep in mind that CFS do not always equate to a criminal incident resulting in a report or arrest.

How often is data updated in CrimeReports.com? CrimeReports.com data is updated automatically once per day and contains the most recent six months of data online.

If I find an event and have additional information to provide to the police, what do I do? Information provided within CrimeReports.com is intended for the expressed purpose of educating the public on police activity in the City of Des Moines. Beyond that intended outcome, the Police Department is hoping to enhance our partnerships with the community and is asking the public to provide the Department with any information that would assist the Des Moines Police Department to solve crimes. Follow-up information should be directed to the Police Department by calling 206-878-3301. As always, if you are calling about an incident in-progress, please call 9-1-1.

Under no circumstances should any member of the public take any action on their own behalf as it relates to the information provided on this website, other than notifying the Des Moines Police Department with information they wish to share.
