Cat Hope artistic director of new music ensemble, DECIBEL.

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

DECIBEL is a group of Western Australian musicians, composers, improvisors and sound artists who are devoted to the realisation of music where acoustic and electronic instruments are represented in musical works. In each DECIBEL performance, electronic instruments are treated as just that: performed instruments in their own right with their own sound quality and presence. There is no traditional PA at a DECIBEL concert since placement of performers and instruments in the space is an integral element in the sonic design of every DECIBEL concert. DECIBEL encourage the creation of new works for this genre, and the representation of works by Australian and Western Australian artists, established and emerging.

DECIBEL have presented over six full programs to date, several Australian tours and featured 4 of Cat’s works. All reviews, audio samples and other information is on the DECIBEL website.

A reworking of the idea in Drive (2001), tremor is currently on exhibition at the RMIT project Space, in Cardigan St, Melbourne, until the end of June. It features a pickled kangaroo skin that is gradually hardening, and a subwoofer vibrating it with some Abe Sada. Here is a picture of it at the opening, on June 4.
