Live In Concert

spacer A one-of-a-kind live show thankfully captured for posterity. Harold Chang, percussionist for both the Arthur Lyman and Martin Denny bands—including the landmark Martin Denny Exotica album that gave the genre its name—performed with us for this show. Harold hadn’t played percussion in over 50 years (he’s now in his mid-80s) but he sounds as fresh as the he did back in the day.

Proceeds from the sale of this recording will benefit the Iolani School Jazz Studies Program, which has trained some of Hawaii’s finest musicians and arts advocates for over 40 years. Notable program alumni include: New York Times jazz critic Nate Chinen; J-Pop superstars Angela Aki, Shen (of DefTech), and Dahlia (of the 2005 World Expo); crooner/bassist Bruce Hamada; WAITIKI 7 bandleader Randy Wong; multi-instrumentalist Mark Tanouye; and blues musician Jason Arimoto.

golden age of exotica, when lounge-music giants like Martin Denny
    walked the Earth.”—Mother Jones magazine
