Ella Finer: Itinerant Resident

April – June 2012

‘An echo, for example, cannot occur without a distance between surfaces for the sounds to bounce from. But the resonation is not on the walls. It is in the emptiness between them. It fills the emptiness with its complex patterning. That patterning is not a distance from itself. It is immediately its own event.’

- Brian Massumi, Parables for the Virtual (2002)

Mimicking the motion of sound as unfixed and unbound to any one location, whose nature it is to move through space, artist Ella Finer proposes to wander the Arthaus building taking up new spaces during 12 weeks so as to map the movement and practice of the voice at each point.

As an artist in residence, Finer will relocate around and within the architecture of the Arthaus building over a three-month period. Mapping the space acoustically with hers and others voices, the project will take multiple forms in the space: from singing into the wide expanses of the atrium, to engaging other artists and thinkers in dialogue on sound and space, to developing performance scores for live voices. Each day will be recorded, and consequently worked into composition, so that each space has its own sonic document.

The final realisation will take the form of a forthcoming exhibition during Summer 2012.
