The Urban Network, directed and run by Yusef Shakur, is comprised of several components: Urban Network Bookstore , Urban Guerrilla Entertainment, Urban Guerrilla Publishing, and finally is the parent group for Yusef’s speaking engagements (*Yusef can be contacted directly at 313-459-6008 if you are interested in having him speak at your next event).
UNB opened its doors on January 15th, 2009, and has seen some incredible developments in its short history. As a business, the bookstore is the host site for Urban Guerrilla Entertainment and Urban Guerrilla Publishing. Moreover, it offers an eclectic mix of new and used books, locally produced African paintings and sculptures, and will soon offer locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables. It also acts as a community space, where community members can participate in workshops, book discussions, movie screenings, and much more. The shop is entirely committed to putting the neighbor back into the ‘hood.
Urban Guerrilla Entertainment is a multi-purpose, versatile music production business located within Urban Network Bookstore. Production facilities include a music studio, ProTools music production software, and other ready to use instruments. For more information on how to rent studio space, either call or email Yusef.
Urban Guerrilla Publishing is an independent publishing company committed to assisting local literary artists succeed in their publishing projects. There are several exciting publications that will be released in 2010. Yusef will be releasing the 4th edition of Window 2 My Soul, including new front and back covers, interviews, and more. Emerging literary artist Kwasi Akwamu will also be releasing his first major publication, Stop Snitching: It Won’t End Crime Anyway, an exciting foray into the politics of informing and how self-policing tactics are necessary in order to bridge community divides.
