Hannukkat HaBayit

Posted on December 29, 2011

THANK YOU!!!

It is hard to tell what benefited most from Sunday’s Hanukkat HaBayit. Was it the building, which got an incredible scrubbing, painting, decorating, and reorganizing? Or was it our community, which came together to re-imagine our sacred space and got closer together in the process?

Through our collective work, we achieved many things. The main office has been transformed into a neater, more welcoming space. There is a gorgeous mural painted in the stairwell leading up to the rabbis’ offices and third floor classrooms, designed and painted by our students. The library is organized, labeled, and functional. The brides’ room is getting a complete make-over.  The bimah of our sanctuary is clutter-free, and the ner tamid, menorah and chuppah poles are shining.  Several hidden storage spaces are neat and organized.

All in all, more than ninety members of our community joined together on Sunday morning and worked straight through the day to transform our makom, our space. Not only did we complete the things we planned to do, but as the volunteers noticed other areas in need of some attention, they dove in and finished new projects too.

You can see before, during, and after pictures here, on KI’s facebook page.

Many many heartfelt thanks to:

(If we’ve forgotten to list your name, please forgive us — and please do remind us that you were here!)

If you’re feeling inspired by the amazing work that our community has been able to do, it is not too late to join us. There are projects continuing all week. Reach out to Deb Shapiro to help finish the brides’ room, Patty Margolis to put in a continued effort in the library, and Eric Brass to make the Williams Street entrance more welcoming.

We were very fortunate to work with local artist Tova Speter, founder of The MEM Project, who worked with our students to design the mural. Tova is teaching Jewish adult art classes in the coming weeks. If you’re interested in learning the art of paper cutting or want to delve into painting, see her class listings here.

Kol hakavod to the entire KI community. We are very proud to be a part of our special kehillah,

The Rabbis, Staff and Board of Congregation Kehillath Israel
