As a young child Helene thought everyone read books and invented stories. Starting school and discovering this was not the case for most children was a bit of a shock. However, she soon discovered that English was her favourite subject and Enid Blyton her favourite author.
While she’s moved on from the ‘Five Find-Outers and Dog’ she hasn’t lost her love of suspense and intrigue. It was partly that passion for all things adventurous that saw her take to the air as a pilot in 1989. Twenty-two years later she’s now a senior Check and Training Captain with Australia’s largest regional airline.
Helene lives near Cairns, a slice of paradise on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef in North Queensland, with her husband and their dog, a slightly obsessive Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Zeus.
The idea for her ‘Border Watch’ series started one early morning. “I discovered a body washed up on the beach. While there was nothing sinister in that discovery, it planted the seed of an idea for a novel focusing on the terrorist threat to Australia. With my work I fly with crews who have flown for Surveillance Australia – the current Coastwatch contractor. That made it easy to draw on their experiences and weave my characters through a realistic scenario.”
WINGS OF FEAR(Border Watch) is the first of her loosely linked trilogy focusing on the coastal surveillance operations round Australia. SHATTERED SKY, the second book, has just been released. BURNING LIES, the final Border Watch book, will be released on 2nd July 2012.
