ONE Lab (1L) was founded as an urban non-profit group concerned for research and education in the synthesis of design and science.  It began as an extraordinary think tank of mid-career architects, engineers, media artists, biologists, ecologists, robotics experts, industrial designers, urban agriculturists, physicists, inventors and planners seeking alternatives to traditional forms of teaching and professional practice. Through our interaction, we discovered the need for an interdisciplinary pedagogical urban zone, where students and practitioners can freely inquire, discuss, conduct experiments, and take actions that have a positive effect on the global community and cities. Our current research attempts to establish new forms of knowledge and new processes of practice at the interface of design, technology, engineering, and biology.

Founders' Vision
The ONE Lab Summer Session 2012 on Future Cities (July 9th to Aug 3rd, 2012) will address the emerging discipline of global urbaneering by assembling a wide range of innovators from fields as diverse as, architecture, material science, urban design, biology, civil engineering and media art.
Design Studio - Four weeks and 100  hours of intense exploration of the future of the city. Using New York as a laboratory, the studio will rethink what is salubrious about the city, in both its forms and its life. The studio will meet for six hour every week day. Every Friday, we will have reviews with distinguished critics. The final review on August 3rd will be a day-long celebration of the future of cities.
Future Cities Seminar - 40  hours of TED style talks given by world renown architects, engineers, biologists, ecologists, industrial designers, physicists and artists offering radically new responses to the real needs and aspirations of future cities. Students may register for the Future City Seminar only. The talks will begin every week evening at 6PM.
Future Cities Workshops - In 4 workshops the participants will learn the processes of synthetic biology, smart materials and nanotechnology, growing materials, grafting trees and plants, scripting and computational modeling for controlled growth.
