Cincinnati: Compost in your Backyard
Body

You've reduced the amount of trash you set out by recycling every possible item allowable in your curbside collection program.. now be amazed at how much more you can reduce your waste when you add in a backyard compost!

Learn what materials are compostable, how to balance the contents of the bin, and some find out some answers to common compost problems.  There will also be time for your questions. At the end of the one hour class you will receive a FREE kitchen collector (you don't have to go to your outdoor compost everyday!) and one of HCRSWD's famous "I Love Compost" magnets. You will also receive a coupon for a future purchase of an outdoor compost container at a partnering store.

Waterfowl, gulls, and other waterbirds
Body

Many waterfowl winter in our region and the second half of February marks the beginning of spring waterfowl migration so we should find plenty of ducks at East Fork. Our trip leader, Joe Bens, is an expert birder and knows East Fork State Park as well as anyone. In fact Joe is the compiler of the East Fork Christmas Bird Count for the past 29 years.

Joe plans to drive around the lake from one vantage point to another, stopping and scanning for waterfowl and other birds at each spot. A diverse number of other species are also expected on this trip and you can be sure that Joe won’t miss much. Winter residents will still be around as well as a few early migrants. There is a fairly reliable spot for Red-headed Woodpeckers and raptors of several different species are expected, including Bald Eagle.

Sponsored by Audobon Society of Ohio.

The Climate Commitment 101 lecture series was founded in April 2007 by the President's Advisory Council on Environment & Sustainability (PACES) to help educate the UC community about the President's Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). At that time, the lecture was a quarterly event and featured a variety of staff and faculty who spoke about climate change issues and their research in sustainability.

The lecture series gradually expanded to a monthly format and now features several lectures each quarter, some organized by the Office of Sustainability and others organized by academic departments and centers. The topics and speakers are diverse, ranging from science and engineering to philosophy and the fine arts. They are a way for the UC community and Greater Cincinnati to learn about sustainability in an informal atmosphere which encourages dialogue and further exploration. All lectures are free and open to the public.
