Welcome to the new web site for Madison Kubb, the social group for kubb enthusiasts in Madison, Wisconsin and in south-central Wisconsin.
Kubb is an addictive 1000-year-old Swedish outdoor game played on many different surfaces and in all kinds of weather. Two teams compete against each other. Players knock over wooden blocks (kubbs) by throwing wooden batons (kastpinnars) at them. Kubb can be described as a combination of bowling, horseshoes, and a bit of chess. We enjoy the sportsmanship of the game, its flexibility to accommodate any skill level, and the opportunity to throw wood in the general direction of our friends.
More information on the game of kubb can be found on Wikipedia here. The American pronunciation of kubb varies. Some use a vowel sound similar to the “oo” in foot or the “i” in bird; others rhyme it with tube. We agree that it doesn’t rhyme with cub.
The first annual Madison Midsommar Kubb Tournament will be held on
Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Olbrich
Park (Madison's east side, on the shores of Lake Monona). This tournament has a limit of 32 three-person teams (no team member can throw
more than 2 batons).
[We know that June 9 isn’t Midsommar weekend in Sweden, which is usually closer to June 21. But this year the best weekend worked out to be over June 9.]
