About the Shpilman Prize The Israel Museum, Jerusalem (IMJ) proudly announced in 2010 the creation of the Shpilman International Prize for Excellence in Photography, to be awarded every second year. 17/01/12 Jacques Ranciére cancelled his visit to Israel

The Shpilman Institute for Photography, Photo-Lexic research group and the Minerva Humanities Center  regret to inform you Ranciére recently cancelled his upcoming visit to Israel, in which he was scheduled to give public lectures in Tel Aviv university. Ranciére announced he will postpone his visit following the Palestinian call to boycot Israeli institutions which do not officially support the Palestinian struggle against the occupation. The Shpilman Institute for Photography, Photo Lexic Research Group and the Minerva Humanities Center are delighted to welcome Jacques Rancière to Israel. During his visit, Rancière will give a lecture at Tel Aviv University. Titled ”What Do Images Show?”, the lecture will focus on problems involved in the issue of “showing” and their political significance. 19/12/11 The Shpilman Institute for Photography hosts Photographer Florian Holzherr

As part of The SIP support of the Israeli pavilion at the Venice Biennial for architecture, titled Aircraft Carrier, Florian Holzherr will present his works in Tel Aviv. Holzherr will be joined by Israeli photographer Assaf Evron (Art Institute, Chicago), both of whom are the artists of the Israeli pavilion. The Shpilman Institute for Photography is proud to assist and host Georges Didi-Huberman and Alain Fleischer as guests of Bezalel Academy of the arts. On Monday, December 19 (7:30 pm), Alain Fleischer will screen his film, Morceaux de Conversations avec Jean-Luc Godard. After the screening, Fleischer will be joined by Didi-Huberman for a talk (English, Tel Aviv Museum). On Tuesday, December 20 (7:30 pm), Georges Didi-Huberman will present his lecture, Comment Filmer les Sans Noms? (How to Film the Nameless?). The lecture will be given in French (with translation to Hebrew) and the following talk in English (Tel Aviv Museum).

01/05/11 The Shpilman Institute for Photography Announces Recipients of its Inaugural Grants Program

The Shpilman Institute for Photography (The SIP) is pleased to announce the recipients of its inaugural Grants Program for research in philosophy and photography and for general research that advances the understanding of the practices, theories, and history of photography. Shalom Shpilman, founder of the Shpilman Institute for Photography, said: “The overwhelming response of theorists, writers and researchers, reinforced the notion that there is a need in further developing theoretical research and  practice of photography.” He added, “I now eagerly look forward to the outstanding outcomes of the current grant winners’ research.”

The Shpilman Prize for Excellence in Photography will be awarded to Michal Heiman in a special ceremony that will take place at the Israel Museum on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011. Heiman, a prolific artist, lecturer and curator, is the first winner of the prize. The award is a joint initiative of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and the Shpilman Art and Culture Foundation. Ms. Heiman was singled out from among 35 candidates from nine countries.

Jeu de Paume (Paris) is holding a special symposium, devoted to archival photographic activity, supported by The SIP – The Shpilman Institute for Photography. “Rethinking the Photographic Archive in the 21st Century” will reflect on archives and collections of photography, their uses and meanings, as well as policy issues related to preservation and research. Theorists and practitioners will discuss the conditions - political, social and institutional – for creating a photographic archive, in addition to research which may lead to creating a truly democratic and scientific culture in this day and age. While comparing various practices, the conference aims at providing answers on what needs to be preserved and presented, as well conditions of preservation.

We will host Jan Tichy and Prof. Louis Kaplan to talk about Moholy-Nagy: Past and Present, Vision and Practice.
