THE THEMATICS FACEBOOK EXPERIMENT

For the first show of 2012, I opened up the selections to those people who “like” the Thematics Facebook Page. Earlier in the week, using random selection, I sent messages to roughly 40 people. I asked these people what the last thing was they listened to, and then what their favourite track off it was. If they happened to be listening to a clip of something online this would’ve been fine also.

The following results, in the form of my playlist this week, are the first 26 people’s selections. I’m extremely satisfied with the outcome as it shows a wide variety of musical styles from people of all demographics. I didn’t care if you didn’t happen to like the track, I expected and got a stinker or two (a mixture of both mine and the test subject’s opinion).

INGLEBURN SPECIAL - A TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF JAKE CARPENTER

This show, as well as being a spotlight on the humble south-west suburb of Sydney, Ingleburn, was a tribute to an awesome friend of mine and a lot of other people’s, Jake Carpenter.

I met Jake through the grind/hardcore scene around 2000-01 and our bands played a lot of gigs together. I always saw Soiled Mattress as Dot Dot Dot’s brother band. Their vocalist, and occasional guitarist Jake had an immense roar and a scream to match, for a band who loved to offend the PC attendees at all-ages gigs, which I sometimes put on myself. I loved seeing the tension that a group of normal westies who loved music and not politics created by smoking bongs at a gig and announcing their track titles.

Jake tragically left us on 22nd October of this year, and he’s left behind a legion of adoring friends and family. Jake, aka MONG, was a keen artist, a musician who did it for kicks and a guy whose diverse and eclectic interests always drew me closer to him. His generosity and passive nature always made it a pleasure to see the guy, to bang heads with him or to party on and talk piles of shit with his Ingleburn crew. I hadn’t seen much of Jake since my band broke up around 2004, but had started seeing him around more over the past few years. I’d always wanted him on the show, so this is as close as I can get and I wish I’d caught up with him more than I had since the crazy early days of our 20s.

This radio broadcast happened from 11pm til 3am and is a mix of Ingleburn bands, rappers and producers together with some of Jake’s favourite tracks as chosen by those closest to him.

Quite often my shows start off pretty loosely, with rattled, coffeed-up mistakes and inane ramblings being the norm most of the time while I settle in. This show takes the cake though for worst lead-off performance yet! I played a DJ Hidden track off a USB stick I brought in as we hadn’t got everything ready in time. BMX Joe, who’d been busy cueing up his decks told me it was on the wrong speed so I tried to cut in on the awful sounds and get the show moving, but my microphone had been bumped to off to start with. Then I plugged in DaBeast’s phone with another DJ Hidden track on it to play before the BMX Joe set, albeit into the outputs of the external source, hence not working.
So if you listen to this show, please bear with us for the first eight minutes and enjoy the brilliant set smashed down by BMX Joe.
