VOCALOID RESEARCH

"Open-Source" Culture & the Cult of Hatsune Miku

About / 研究者

My name is Alex Leavitt, and I am a PhD student at the Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism at the University of Southern California. I study social media and Internet technologies. You can read more about my research and background by visiting my homepage.

Research / 研究

Throughout 2011, I have been working on a project about Vocaloid that looks at the effect of large networks of people online on production in the creative industries. I'm interested in Vocaloid because it presents a new case study for examining "commons-based peer production" beyond what has ordinarily been studied: free and open-source software (FOSS) and Wikipedia.

Interviews / インタビュー

This summer, I'll be conducting various pieces of research, but primarily I want to focus on ethnographic methods, namely interviews. I'm looking to interview members of the industry that create Vocaloid software, music producers that use it, and fans of the franchise: artists, cosplayers, and event holders.
