We believe that an inclusive culture, in which individual differences are celebrated, is the right thing for our people and the wider community we serve. It also makes good sense for our business.
If we are to realise our ambitious plans for growth, it's important that we attract and retain the best people, harness their talents and promote an environment where everyone can fulfil their potential.
This is why we are committed to ensuring that diversity and inclusion is promoted right across our business. Respect for others is one of our core values.
Why this matters to our business
Our customers are looking increasingly for innovative and joined-up solutions. With diverse teams, made up of a broad range of talent, we will be better able to meet their needs.
Our capacity to work seamlessly across boundaries and borders helps to set us apart from our competitors. A commitment to fostering diversity helps us meet evolving needs in the market and build stronger relations with our customers.
A growing number of high-profile customers and suppliers are looking to work with partners who share their values, particularly around diversity and inclusion. We have built a very strong partnership with a large number of customers such as the Olympic Development Agency for example, in part as a result of our shared commitment to a diverse and inclusive workforce and culture. This has been recognised by a number of awards by the Authority, including Best Overall Contribution to Diversity on the London 2012 Olympics site.
People in the company and potential recruits are also increasingly interested in working for a company that shares their values of inclusion and respect. In response, we're looking to dispel some of the preconceptions about our business and industry by promoting the broader range of opportunities on offer to people in the Group, the growing diversity of our workforce and our range of working patterns.
We are continually looking to recruit people from the broadest possible pool, focusing on those who share our values of excellence, integrity, teamwork and respect, so that we can attract and retain the best people in the market.
Our commitment
Our value of Respect refers explicitly to a commitment to appreciate others in the business and wider community. Our promise is to realise this commitment, not only through rigorous compliance with our legal obligations, but also through a series of initiatives and activities that will bring diversity and inclusion alive in the Group.
Since the Group made a public commitment to value diversity in our Sustainability Report in 2009, we have worked hard to make progress, including:
- Regular monitoring and revision of our core people processes (such as recruitment, performance management, development and promotion) to ensure that they are aligned to our goal of promoting diversity and inclusion at all levels.
- The availability of tailored diversity awareness training for all our managers and leaders.
These and other measures will provide a platform from which we can demonstrate an ongoing commitment to diversity to all our stakeholders. Our aim is to establish Balfour Beatty as a place where all our people can fulfil their potential regardless of background, and we harness the broadest range of talents and experience to achieve our goals.
