Artist Statement

The presence of the art to the viewer is so much more poignant when the painting is large. The experience is similar to standing at an open doorway, beauty awaiting discovery as you step through. My “Explorations” series measure 6’X 4½’. Even my plein air paintings are larger than customary.

The acrylic paints are my custom mix. They appear similar to pastel medium, because of the roughness of the canvas and the lack of “plastic sheen” that so many acrylics have. I start on raw canvas with a layer of toned gesso then add many layers of paint to build the final color/image.

All of my images are reflective of my lifetime in Florida. My earliest memory is looking up at the amazing white Angel’s Trumpets hanging from my Grandmother’s tree in Miami.

Does the painting exist that rivals the infinite, complex beauty growing everywhere around us? However impossible, I flourish in the pursuit of that beauty, looking closely and carefully, constructing in paint and hoping the leaf doesn’t drop off midstroke.
