Rocina Dalzell '13 of Brooklyn, N.Y., is honored for her efforts around issues surrounding child welfare and HIV/AIDS.

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - Rocina Dalzell '13 of Brooklyn, N.Y., has been named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact. She is one of 162 college students from across the United States to be selected for their achievements in finding solutions to community problems.

"These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can — and does — play in building a better world," said Campus Compact Board Chair James B. Dworkin, chancellor at Purdue University North Central.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Thom Bassett, a lecturer in the Department of English and Cultural Studies, is the author of "Birth of a Demon," the cover article of the spring issue of Civil War Monitor. The article examines some of the surprising contradictions of Civil War Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman. 

In this podcast (10:10), Bassett (left) spoke with University Relations' Paul DeWolf about the famous leader of Union troops. On the one hand, Bassett tells DeWolf, Sherman had no problem applying the "hard hand of war" not only to Southern troops but Southerners themselves, leaving "in his wake civilians who were utterly terrorized." On the other hand, "as ruthless as his intentions were, there was a part of him that absolutely hated" the destruction left behind by his marches across the South.

Bryant Players present the musical ‘Rent’ April 13-15

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Tickets are now on sale for the Bryant Players' presentation of Rent, which will be performed April 13-15.

"It's not just a show that people know. It's a show that people love," said Rent director Mary Green '12 of Merrick, N.Y. And because of what Rent is and what it stands for, it's a show that has united cast and crew, said Green, who is double-majoring in management and marketing.

Associate’s degrees are the missing link

Ross Gittell, a leading economic forecaster in New Hampshire, tells Bryant's RI Economic Summit that R.I. is weak in providing training for jobs that require more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelor's degree. Forty percent of future job openings will be for people with associate's degrees, but RI ranks 32nd in the nation for the percentage of its population with an associate's degree.

University statement regarding March 31 townhouse fire

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — An isolated fire in one unit of Bryant University Townhouse E Block began early this morning and was quickly extinguished. E Block is a small residential facility housing a total of 17 students. All of the students in this facility were safely evacuated and there were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is being investigated by the Town of Smithfield Fire and Police Departments. The University Department of Public Safety is cooperating in the investigation.

Chief scientist at NOAA is keynote presenter at Bryant’s Research and Engagement Day

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - Kathryn D. Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space, will discuss earth observation and prediction and her experiences as a scientist, astronaut and explorer at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in Bryant University's Janikies Theater, 1150 Douglas Pike.

Dr. Sullivan's presentation, which is free and open to the public, is part of Bryant University's second annual Research and Engagement Day, known as REDay. Classes are canceled through 5 p.m. so that faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as industry and community partners associated with Bryant can participate in a daylong showcase of research, creativity and innovative academic accomplishments.

Machtley recognized by New England Board of Higher Educaiton

The New England Board of Higher Education presented its Rhode Island State Merit Award to Bryant University President Ronald K. Machtley on Friday, March 2. The award cited his "pivotal contributions to academic excellence, enrollment, campus expansion, technology and Division I sports and having established an exceptional foundation for the university's continued success."

Students’ project boosts Corridor Facebook page

The Worcester (Mass.) Telegram reports that "a group of Bryant University students have set their sights high for their spring semester project. As participants in Bryant's Management 200 class, the students ... are working with the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor to dramatically increase the visibility of the Heritage Corridor's Facebook page."

Campus-wide drill on Code 1 emergency conducted this morning

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, Bryant University conducted a drill for a Code 1 emergency. All students, faculty and staff participated in the simulation, which lasted for approximately 30 minutes.

Such drills are mandated by the Higher Education Organization Act of 2008.
