Ephelis

Ephelis are small group of concentrated melanin which is visible in people having fair complexion. An ephelis is also known as freckles. Ephelis do not have melanocytes (cells which produce melanin). Ephelis is different from moles and lentigines.Anyone can get ephelis no matter what their genetic background is. However, one getting ephelis is genetic. This is related to the presence of MC1Rgene variant (melanocortin-1 receptor). Ephelis is triggered by excessive exposure to sunlight. When exposed to sunlight, the UV-B radiation triggers the melanocytes to start production of melanin thus causing ephelis to become darker.
