Wood Filler

spacer If you’ve ever found the need to repair a nick, deep scratch, hole or gouge in a piece of wood, then you most likely used a wood filler for the job.

Wood filler can be used on almost any wood surface, and can be used indoors or out. There are two types of wood filler, water based and solvent based. Which one you choose is a matter of personal choice.

They both do the job, but the water based filler will be easier to clean up, as no chemicals or solvents will be needed. The solvent based filler will require turpentine or acetone for cleaning.

When selecting from the many types and brands of wood fillers on the market, there are a few things to look for, besides water based vs solvent based. Most importantly you want a wood filler that will adhere to the wood properly and not crumble or come dislodged when dry. The filler should sand easily once dry and leave a smooth finish.

Wood filler comes in different colors, and depending on what you are using the product for you may want to choose a close match or a contrasting color.  If using the wood filler to make a repair, that you want to look flawless, pick the close match. However, if you are using the wood filler to even out the grain on say a hardwood floor, you may want to choose the contrast so the grain color stands out.

While both types of filler are okay to use inside and out, you may want to lean towards the solvent based filler for an outdoor product, as the water based may freeze in lower temperatures.

Another great use for wood filler is as an adhesive.  Wood filler not only bonds to the wood but also to other surfaces, such as ceramics, concrete, and metal. In a situation where you need the two to adhere, as in the case of placing a screw in a loose joint, wood filler can make the job twice as strong.

Wood filler is a great product to have on hand in any home. Its uses are many and when used properly it can restore the beauty to any number of wood products, from floors to furniture.

Wood filler can be sanded and stained or painted to match any existing wood and can also be nailed in to, sawed or drilled just like the real thing.
