At the end of July, Jack and the band wrapped up the To The Sea world tour in Europe. Thanks to the 680,298 fans who attended the 82 shows in 17 countries across the globe throughout 2010 and 2011. The To The Sea tour had many memorable moments including jamming with Jimmy Cliff in Croatia, Jack and Zach crowd surfing at the Santa Barbara Bowl, and Ben Stiller’s air guitar sit-in along with two unannounced opening sets by Merlo (aka JRadio) in Paris.

Everyone on the 2010 and 2011 Jack Johnson To The Sea World Tour made multiple efforts to reduce our environmental footprint while on the road. Some of those efforts included:

  • Fueling all buses, trucks and site generators with 26,000 gallons of sustainably produced biodiesel fuel.
  • Providing Brita Hydration water stations in an effort to encourage fans to go plastic free, preventing over 55,000 single plastic use water from entering the waste stream.
  • Using reusable bottles and filling up with Brita pitchers backstage, eliminating the use of over 4,000 single use plastic bottles.
  • Sourcing food from local farms, resulting in the investment of over $18,000 in local sustainable agriculture.
  • Implementing extensive recycling and waste reduction systems to further reduce our consumption, diverting over 460 tons of waste from the landfill.
  • Encouraging the use of biodegradable and recycled food service products instead of those made with petroleum based plastic and virgin paper.
  • Consulting with each venue on sustainable strategies they could employ to reduce their waste and carbon footprint through Jack’s Green Rider.  Recycling, water stations, composting, energy efficient lighting and carbon offsets were just a few ways that venues and promoters made positive changes as well.
  • Offering fans the opportunity to offset their carbon footprint when they purchased a To The Sea sticker at a show or through Ticketmaster.  Over 12,000 fans offset a combined 920 tons of carbon from their travel to and from shows.

After all these greening efforts were taken, the remaining carbon footprint of the tour was calculated and offset, ensuring a 100% carbon neutral tour. To The Sea tour offset 2,338 tons of CO2 by supporting a variety of projects around the globe including renewable energy, reforestation, methane abatement and biomass projects.  To view the full Jack Johnson To The Sea 2010/2011 World Tour Carbon Offset Report please click here.

Ocean Conservancy

Ocean Conservancy works with partners like the Japan Environmental Action Network (JEAN) to help preserve our ocean and waterways through ocean trash research and cleanup efforts. JEAN was an outstanding All At Once non-profit partner during the 2008 Jack Johnson tour of Japan and they are currently focusing on clean up efforts in the wake of the devastating tsunami that hit their coast one year ago. The Ocean Conservancy is raising funds, up to $10,000, to distribute to JEAN for marine debris research and removal along Japan’s coast. Donate Now!

Jack Johnson's All At Once Campaign is partnering with Non-Profits to Support Gulf Oil Spill Recovery Efforts

  • As part of the All At Once campaign, the "To The Sea" Tour is reaching out to local and national non-profits in areas affected by the Gulf Oil Spill.
  • The goal is to link up All At Once community members with organizations to encourage volunteerism and direct donations. These groups will be featured at www.AllAtOnce.org and fans can learn more first-hand in the Village Green at Jack Johnson concerts taking place in areas affected by the Oil Spill.
  • The Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation is committing up to $70,000 to non-profits working on Gulf Oil Spill relief efforts, with $30,000 in direct donations and up to $40,000 in matching grants.
  • Your donation to these groups will be matched by Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation (up to $2500 per group)!
Some of the key All At Once non-profit partners include:

Gulf Waterkeepers: "Save Our Gulf" is an initiative by Waterkeeper Alliance to support the Gulf Waterkeepers working to protect the Gulf Coast's communities and environment from the long-term impacts of the BP oil spill. The Gulf Waterkeepers include 7 Waterkeepers in impacted areas of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida. saveourgulf.org

Gulf Restoration Network: The Gulf Restoration Network is committed to uniting and empowering people to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf Region. They are working directly with the community and several other environmental organizations to respond to the oil spill through monitoring and clean up efforts. www.healthygulf.org/

Louisiana Bucket Brigade: The Louisiana Bucket Brigade is an environmental health and justice organization helping communities reduce pollution and protect public health. As the oil spill drifts towards land, residents of the Gulf Coast can report endangered wildlife, oily beaches and water, health impacts and other problems using the Oil Spill Crisis Map. www.labucketbrigade.org

Ocean Conservancy: Ocean Conservancy is on the ground in the Gulf helping guide the restoration efforts, conducting "pre-oil arrival" beach clean-ups, and working with communities whose livelihoods have been affected. They are also working for energy reform legislation that protects the ocean and prevents a similar disaster from occurring in the future. www.oceanconservancy.org

National Wildlife Federation: NWF is organizing a network of volunteers to monitor the coast for wildlife in distress. They have established a Restoration Fund to support efforts to protect wildlife. They also have created a website for kids and parents to answer questions about the oil spill. www.nwf.org/Home/Oil-Spill.aspx

Surfrider Foundation: Surfrider's Not the Answer campaign promotes "5 Things You Can Do" to take action including support of a moratorium on off-shore oil drilling, volunteering, documenting the spill, and support of alternative energy. oilonthebeach.blogspot.com

Galveston Bay Foundation (Texas): The Galveston Bay Foundation remains on standby to provide volunteer help in the case of any local impacts from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. They are collecting names and information for volunteers who may assist in the recovery process. www.galvbay.org/conservation_oil.html

Tampa Bay Watch (Florida): Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteers to assist in pre-beach cleaning, oil boom deployment and transporting wildlife to rehabilitation centers. www.tampabaywatch.org/

Gulf Coast residents can report oil spill impacts

All At Once non-profit partners Ocean Conservancy and Surfrider Foundation have collaborated with CitySourced to develop the SkyTruth Oil Spill Reporter - a free smart phone application that empowers Gulf Coast residents to snap and tag photos of oil on the land, in the water, and affected wildlife. These citizen reports help prioritize clean-up efforts and document the extent of the spill for policy makers and the public. www.skytruth.com
