The Listening Party
Posted on: March 19, 2012, 12:07 pm | Views: 37 | Comments: 0
Our "Album Listening Party" was hands down one of the most intimate and personal Allred shows. I had no idea what to expect when we passed around that microphone. To be honest I just expected some comments about the new songs. I was even a little afraid no one would say anything.

The comments ended up being exactly what the band and I needed to hear. Ones of support and kindness. A lot of them were stories of how the music and shows have helped in some way. It's funny how things happen like that. When you least expect it.

I have felt for a while that the music, the musicianship, and the overall world of Allred has become better and brighter. There is more of a focus now. I feel like people are finally starting to notice what this music has always been about.

The band and I had prepared some dressed down versions of a few of the new songs ("Spark/"Along The Way") and we planned on playing about half the record for people to hear. It was not as packed of a room as we are normally accustomed to at Velour. But it was perfect. Just enough room for everyone to sit down and listen. All the people that came were so polite their words truly touched me. I can't remember a show where I was on the verge of tears the entire time. These weren't tears of sorrow but ones of gratitude and joy.

Thank you all for sharing such a special night with us. This record will change things for us. We can't wait for the future and all that is yet to come!

Time has become a blur. There is only the present. There is only now. So much has changed. You can become an entirely different person over the corse of a year. You can move an hour away and suddenly your world is unrecognizable. You can fall in love with music all over again. You can find yourself. You can realize what you're meant for. You can heal....

This is what happened to me.

I've never been so happy in my entire life. The band, the shows and the songs have never been better. Everything has become brighter. Because of this, the record turned has turned out better than I could possibly have imagined. We finally made an album the right way. A big thank you to Scott Wiley for bringing out the best in all of us. I'm so proud of Sheyn, Tanner, Trent and Tate. I am so fortunate to have grown up with these exceptional people, and fantastic musicians that have sacrificed so much for me. There is no better feeling than looking across a stage at your good friends sharing something you believe in. They truly brought a whole new life to these songs. I could have not have done it alone. A huge piece would have been missing if this was an acoustic record.

The new record will be "Allred" self titled and it feels like the right time. I've taken everything I've learned the last 7 years and put it all into one vision. It's the first time I can listen back and know this was the best I could possibly do. My heart is in these words. At some point I stopped writing and started listening to it.There's a rawness and earnestness that's never been captured before. This record encapsulates my life.

Since 2006, I feel like I've grown up in front of all of you. Some things I'm very proud of and some I'm not. But I don't regret a single thing. My triumphs as well as my failures have made me who I am. I cherish all the things you've taught me, the love you've shown me, your kind words, your patience and all your support.

We'll be showing a sneak peak at the new songs at our Listening Party March 10th! And we will be releasing "Allred" in the Fall.

I promise to never stop making music if you keep listening. I don't make this music for fellow musicians, the critics or the haters. I don't make it for money, fame or praise. I make it for you! Thank you for giving my life meaning.

I love you all,

John Allred

Will "Come Thou Fount" be on the new record?

Thank you all for being a part of this!

We passed our goal of $5,000 and this has changed everything! This has opened up a whole new world of opportunities.

Now that we have passed our budget we may have room to record one more song for the record. As some of you may know I've been performing "Come Thou Fount" at shows. It actually has had more of a response than any other song I've ever posted on Soundcloud. (over 2,000 listens in one week)

It is a special song to me and if I'm going to release it, it's going to be done right. I'm hoping to record it with full orchestration (cellos, violin, piano) and It's all is your hands.

So here is the deal:

If we reach $6,000 I will add "Come Thou Fount" to the record and it will be the first single released (two months prior to the initial release). The first people to get it will be YOU and YOU ONLY!

So help spread the word. We never thought we'd get this far so, lets reach for the stars!

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart

John Allred

Allred Update 11.01.11

I'm sure you were all wondering what the "big announcement" was. Well here it is. We are so excited to launch our Kickstarter today.

www.kickstarter.com/projects/1656708285/help-allred-make-a-new-record

This starts a whole new chapter for me as an artist and us as a band. I've never asked for help before. In a lot of ways I've been afraid to ask. I've always done this on my own. But, after talking with the band, my close friends and family I feel that it's the right time to ask. These new songs are very special and need to be treated that way. If you guys help out...I promise you all it will be worth it!

With Love,

John

An update of sorts
Posted on: October 22, 2011, 2:51 pm | Views: 467 | Comments: 2

Hello Everybody!

I just wanted to give you an update on what's happening in the small world of Allred. The band and I officially started recording for the new record last Tuesday at Rock Canyon Studios. We posted a live streaming video just to give you guys a hint but I think it confused people more than it informed them. Sorry bout that:)

The new full length record will consist of 6 band songs, a very special cover, and 3 brand new acoustic songs that I've never played live. We will be taking our time on this one. So no release date for quite a while.

It is a very exciting time to be alive. I'm so lucky to be playing and making a record with such close friends and exceptional musicians. I'm so grateful to have so much support from people like you. We want everyone to be more a part of the recording process than ever before. We'll have more info about that very soon! Till Then...

Love,

JA

P.S. Thank you all for the birthday wishes, I read every comment and I appreciate all of the support and kind words. I love you all!

Its been 3 years since I stood on that stage all alone. The performance is going to be recorded and given to away everyone for free who attends. I hope you can join us for a special night and I promise to keep the stories to a minimum.

Healing from the inside out

I'm about to get more personal than I ever have before. I pray that sharing this story may help or inspire people and make you realize you can change anything you put your mind to. This has been a year unlike any other in my life. For years I only lived for one thing and one thing only. Music.

For the last 7 years I neglected every other area of my life to a point where I almost destroyed myself. My body was literally falling apart and my mind was hazey. For over 5 years I have been in constant pain. Literally from head to toe (An old knee injury in college and two impacted wisdom teeth). I would have sharp pains that would last days, even weeks.

Sometimes the pain was so severe I would spend countless days staying in bed and only getting up to write songs and record. Now you can understand why the songs on "The Sound" were so depressing. Just remember when you listen to that record, I was in pain while singing every lyric, strumming every guitar, playing every piano key. Please understand if I ever seemed rude or dismissive, it was simply because I was miserable. I'm so sorry if I seemed overconfident or unthankful to any of you.

By 2009 I was playing over 250 shows a year...mostly colleges.  I would travel on Sunday's so there was no time for church. I remember waking up one morning in a hotel room having absolutely no idea where I was.

I thought to myself "something has to change...this isn't working...there is more to life than this"

So last August I moved down to Provo and enrolled back in school. I can honestly tell you now that miracles do happen. I started working out 6 days a week, and eating a healthy balanced diet. After only 3 months I had gained 30 pounds of muscle and my knee pain was completely gone. I have become fully active in church and suddenly the world is clearer and even more beautiful than before.

All this time I thought focusing just on music it would make it better. But now I find the more balanced my life was the more the music improved. The songs have become more focused and more hopeful than ever.

As of yesterday I finally had my wisdom teeth removed. For the first time in almost 8 years I will be singing without them. Get ready to see a huge difference.

I have realized now this music isn't about me at all. It's for the people who listen to it. It doesn't matter what those songs really mean to me, it's how they matter to people like you. I'm lucky that anyone had made me a part of their life soundtrack.

I try to read all your comments, every email and talk to everyone at every show. I am so grateful for each of you. Without whom I would not be where I am. I want you all to know I love you.

Big things are about to happen for Allred. This year will be even better than the last. Thank you all for your support. You are such a blessing in my life.

You're a part of this!

John

Covers, Covers, Covers...
Posted on: July 11, 2011, 10:10 pm | Views: 708 | Comments: 17
Have you ever had a embarrassing yearbook picture and you wish you could have changed how it looked or even replace the whole thing? Thats how I feel about the first Allred Covers record. It was the first record I recorded on my own with limited equipment and knowledge. I have learned so much in 4 years of recording and touring. So I decided to redo the the entire record early this year and took my time to get it right. I am so happy with how its turned out. This is the way I always intended them to sound. I can't wait for you to hear them. Lets just act like those old versions never existed shall we?

Also, If you guys didn't notice, I spent the better part of this year posting random covers songs via tumblr and soundcloud. It just so happens that it all added up to about 10 songs this month. I guess that means it's time to release another covers record.

So July 29th I'll be putting them on Itunes and having a release show as well. We're trying a new venue in Orem that has a really cool vibe. It will be held at The Roll Up (1605 S State St.) I've decided to hook everyone up and give them both away for the price of admission.

Thank you all for the support these last 7 years. It's been a trip. I love you all

John

Things are about to change. These will possibly the last times we get to play in such a small intimate setting and releasing a record all on our own. We look forward to sharing such a special night with you. Velour will look and feel like it never has before. And so will we...

We have prepared something really unique for those who choose to attend. This is just one of those shows we don't want you to miss.Tickets are still available at www.24tix.com . It all starts at 8pm/$8

I love you all for giving us so much support. Utah has been so good to me over the last 7 years. I can never repay you. But I promise I will never forget what such a special place this really is. Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart
