NT 556 Ancient and Contemporary Issues in I-II Corinthians – 3 graduate credits

Saturday, July 7, 2012 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Tuesdays, 5:30-10:15 p.m.

Dates: July 7, 10, 17, 24, 31

When we receive letters we generally read them from start to finish, seeking to understand the totality of their content. When we approach the letters in the New Testament we are invited to read another’s mail! In the history of the church one of its shortfallings with the Bible is its inability to read the New Testament documents as complete wholes. As a result, the Bible is oftentimes treated as a “patchwork of fragments and not complete wholes.” The aim of this course is to expose the student to Paul’s letters to the Corinthian church, to show that the issues they faced – theologically, practically, philosophically, et al, are still issues faced by the modern church today.  Instructor:  John Oliff

MAC 661 Family Retreat Introduction to the World of Disability – 2 graduate credits

Several Dates Available in Summer 2012

The purpose of this course is to explore the different ways in which people affected by disability are a missing yet integral part of the body of Christ.  By serving for one week as a volunteer/Short Term Missionary (STM) at a Joni and Friends Family Retreat, the student is immersed in the world of disability.  This experience will give the student the opportunity to see the need for ministry to people affected by disability and the gifts people with disability can bring to the body of Christ.  The student will have the opportunity to see their own “disability” as a platform for God’s grace in their lives and in the lives of others. Joni and Friends sponsors multiple Family Retreats at locations throughout the country. Students taking this course must also apply to serve at Family Retreat on the Joni and Friends website.

MAC 717 One Session Coaching – 1 graduate credit or 9 CE hours

Friday, July 6, 2012 6:00-9:00 p.m.; Saturday, July 7, 2012 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

There are times in a counseling situation when you have limited time to help a client move forward. Counselors and pastors will develop competence in an action focused change model developed for use in a single counseling session and will practice applying the model to become equipped for helping clients and congregants as well as to effectively self-coach to remove obstacles to forward movement.

MAC 718 Abuse in the Church: Biblical, Legal, & Counseling Perspectives

Why the New Postmillennialism Merits a Fresh Look.

spacer Dr. R. Todd Mangum, Professor of Theology and Academic Dean, presented a paper at the Eastern Regional Meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society. The conference, held on March 2 in Lancaster, PA, centered around Constantine and Christendom. Dr. Mangum's paper, titled "Why the 'new postmillennialism' really does merit a fresh look", takes a look at the ongoing discussion of eschatology.

"Today, in the early decades of the 21st century, the discussion between premillennialists, postmillennialists and amillennialists is revving up again, hearkening back to discussions between these three eschatological camps at the beginning of the 20th century. What accounts for the renewed vigor of this discussion? And, in particular, what about the current state of this discussion would cause someone like me, a recipient from Dallas Seminary of the John F. Walvoord award for work in eschatology,1 to suggest that postmillennialism is worth a fresh look?" Click here to read the paper in its entirety.

The ACT 3 Missional-Ecumenical Leadership Cohort

We have created a nine-month process called the Missional-Ecumenical Leadership Cohort program. This program is designed for 15-25 active learners who will learn how to follow an ancient-future vision. These missional-ecumenical cohort groups will answer one life-changing question: How does the gospel of the kingdom of God frame our outlook, lifestyle and dreams so we can become effective missional-ecumenists?

The ACT 3 Missional-Ecumenical Leadership Cohort

To learn more about the ACT 3 Missional-Ecumenical Leadership Cohort experience please check out the videos and information online.

A Philadelphia area cohort begins September 20th. Three additional all-day meetings will be November 29th, January 31st (2013) and April 11th (2013).

To apply for this group:spacer

You need to fill out the application online or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to begin the process. You will be interviewed before acceptance.

Other cities are also being considered. Check the ACT 3 website for updated information about cities and dates. Contact us if you would like to form a cohort group.

Details on how the Cohort will work:

Each cohort will meet for four all day sessions over a nine-month period. At least two small group meetings will also take place. Learners will actively participate with Dr. John H. Armstrong and each other. Social media will supplement the process. Graduates will be encouraged to continue to receive mentoring in order to put their vision into action. In this process the individuality of each person is respected while they become involved in learning how to practice their missional vision in a multidenominational community.

Requirements for participation, financial costs, an application form, a syllabus listing the books and an explanation of the entire nine-month process, as well as other important information, can all be found at www.act3online.com. There are ways to receive academic credit for a cohort.

Order DVD From Our Recent Event Involving Diane Langberg

Diane Langberg

spacer As Christians, we have a responsibility to help those that are in need. In March of 2011, Biblical Seminary hosted a three day conference entitled “The Biblical Call: A Christian Response to Human Trafficking and Sexual Abuse” which dealt with this very issue. Dr. Diane Langberg, Bethany Hoang, Pearl Kim, and Bob Morrison all delivered pertinent information on how this issue should be handled. The impact of the conference was felt by all of the attendees.

If you would like to view these powerful messages regarding human trafficking and sexual abuse, order the 3 DVD set containing talks from the conference.

"Proclaiming "freedom for the captives" is an essential part of the gospel according to Jesus (Luke 4:16-21). This conference challenged all of us to make that a serious part of our discipleship."

- Dr. Dave Dunbar

  • Learn to pray through suffering
  • Understand how to interpret suffering through the story of the Bible

GOD OR MAMMON: THE MEANING OF MONEY IN THE “PRESENT EVIL AGE”

Economic questions are closely linked the biblical worldview. Our expectations and values about Mammon expose our hearts. Are you a disciple or consumer?

Objectives

  • Understand consumerism and discern its impact upon our lives
  • Develop a biblical-theological understanding about money
  • Learn about the positive uses of money
