The Malawi Project

A PARTNERSHIP FOR THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN OF MALAWI

Purpose

The people of Malawi face the triple threat of HIV/AIDS, food insecurity and weak governance. A land-locked country in South East Africa, Malawi ranks among the world's most densely populated and least developed countries. Roughtly the size of Pennsylvania, 85% of its 13 million citizens live in rural less-developed areas and half the population lives below the poverty line.

Women and children often bear the greatest burden. Over 91,000 children are infected with HIV/AIDS and close to half of the estimated 2 million orphans were orphaned due to this disease. Chronic malnutrition is widespread. Infant and maternal mortality rates are high.

The situation is desperate and tragic. But there is a solution.

About the Project

In partnership with St. Luke's Health System, Nueterra Healthcare, the One5 Foundation (One5) is addressing the housing, health care, educational, economic and spiritual needs of women and children in Malawi. Through this partnership, we are building a birthing center, medical clinic, and orphanages. We are providing programs for prenatal care, newborn care, and family planning; PMTCT, EID and ART; and to provide for food, clothing, housing, health care and education for the orphans and other vulnerable children.

In cooperation with Nueterra Healthcare and St. Luke's Health System, the One5 provides the facilities and staff to deliver health care as well as specialized care, to the women and children; and assists with the health care needs of the entire community.

The people of Malawi have their counterparts throughout the developing world. Partnerships like the one forged by One5, St. Luke's Health System and Nueterra Healthcare have the best chance of changing people's lives for the better. We intend to take this model and apply it wherever it's needed.
