How to be a Monster

Thurs 1st - Sat 3rd March, 7.30pm

by Ade Morris
directed by Martin Gibbons

If you ever thought that being a teenager is a laugh a minute carefree existence then the new comedy, How TO BE A MONSTER should make you think again. A light-hearted examination of teenage angst – a look at fears, friendships, parents, pranks, puppy fat and school.

Two young people stand accused of being monsters and are made to review their behaviour. The Trail reveals all manner of insecurities including a deep fear of growing-up. Using physical theatre and a non naturalistic setting Theatre Royal Margate’s senior youth theatre explore youth culture in their second professional production directed by Martin Gibbons

Director Martin Gibbons lives in Birchington and has been working as a professional writer and performer since graduating from the University of Kent in 2004 with a BA Honours in Drama and Theatre Studies. He has toured nationally every year an outdoor Shakespeare ensemble whose style draws from a wide variety of popular theatre traditions from commedia dell'arte and clowning to stand-up comedy and silent movies. Artistic Director of Poco Loco Productions, an absurdist storytelling theatre company based in Thanet, he leads both the junior and senior youth theatre programmes at TRM.

“When working with the young people in our weekly sessions I am influenced by improvisational techniques of Keith Johnstone and we use a lot of Laban movement techniques to engage youth theatre members in the months leading up to the development of the script.

I am proud to be working with such a talented group of youngsters. As an artists who has grown up in Thanet, it has delighted me to see such willingness to develop, grow and create”.
