Sony Sucks Up Losses On Console Sales
November 17, 2006

On launch day iSuppli, iSuppli a leading provider of industry market intelligence and advice, estimates that the 60GB version of the PS3, which sells for $599, actually costs Sony $840 to build, not including the controller and packaging. The $499, 20GB model costs $805 to build. This means that on each retail unit sold, Sony loses $306 / $241.

Th plan? Take a loss on the console, and make it back on the games. Focusing their efforst on offering a slew of titles at prices hitting $90 per, Sony is betting on the same formula that Microfsoft is using with their X-Box 360 console. (Microsoft was taking a loss of $71 on each unit sold back in 2005.)

The upside for Sony is that just as Microsft learned, as time goes on the prices of chips come down and profit margis finally beomce a reality. iSuppli's analysis of the Xbox 360, and the price of the components used in it reveals, that Microsoft may be close to hitting the break-even point on the Xbox 360. The console now costs Microsoft $323 to manufacture, leaving a gross profit of $76 per unit.
