As a former small business owner, Karen Harrison has experienced firsthand the joys, frustrations and adrenaline of starting, growing and managing one’s own company. The first business she started was in college, when she opened her own guitar school and recruited students by walking door-to-door, passing out hand-made flyers she created on her Mom’s typewriter. Being the only employee in a cash-only business, she kept things simple. By the time she was in her twenties, Karen was ready for a larger challenge and opened a full-service advertising agency with 12 employees and over 50 clients. Suddenly, there was rent, 401(k) plans, health care benefits, payables, receivables, equipment, inventory, and long, long hours.
In addition to her membership in NAWBO at the time, the other key relationship she really cherished was with her banker-Dad, who helped her understand cash-flow management and how to leverage the tools offered by a business bank to better run a company. Passionate about providing the same valuable service to other small business owners, Karen decided to follow in her Dad’s footsteps and pursue banking as a career.
Today, Karen serves as Senior Vice President, Small Business Banking Manager for Bank of America, one of NAWBO’s premier corporate sponsors. Karen was recently elected to NAWBO’s Advisory Board.
