THE NEED

This project is in collaboration with OFCB Ministries in Bayonnais Haiti, a network of churches affiliated with OFCB in North Carolina, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison EWB student chapter. The project goal is to design and build a health clinic to serve over 80,000 people in the Bayonnais Valley region in northwest Haiti and to expand the existing power system of the school. The region lacks basic healthcare services - the nearest medical facility is over an hours drive away down sometimes impassable mountain roads.Bayonnais is a very poor region in the mountains of Haiti, a country which has the highest childbirth and infant mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere. EWB first became a project partner in 2004 to bring renewable power to a local school as part of the communitys development goals.Building upon the success of the project, EWB-SFP is now working on all aspects of the clinic design and construction, including structural design, water and sanitation, and the clinic power system. The goal is to have clinic fully operational by 2013 when the first set of medical students from the community complete their training and return to serve.

PROJECT SCOPE

In January of 2010, Haiti was devastated by an earthquake that struck 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince. While the Bayonnais area was far from the epicenter, the community felt the impact through friends, family and an influx of hundreds of people fleeing the capital. In October, the country suffered from a massive Cholera outbreak. Because of the health and safety concerns, travel to the country became impossible for the project teams. Despite these challenges, EWB-SFP was able to make important advancements from afar.

FUTURE INVOLVEMENT

In 2011, EWB-SFP will begin a series of project trips to the Bayonnais region to upgrade the schools existing power system and construct Phase 1 of the Health Clinic. March will see the team in Bayonnais working to increase the capacity and sustainability of the schools current power system. In addition, there will be a final surveying and water testing effort for the health clinic In early May, the team will break ground on the first phase of the health clinic. Construction will continue through the end of June. In July, the clinic power system will be commissioned and the Bayonnais health clinic will begin serving the community.
