“An extraordinarily versatile orchestra.”—The Los Angeles Times
The nation’s pre-eminent big band makes its way to New Brunswick for one night only with the legendary jazz musician/composer Wynton Marsalis. The first jazz composer to win the Pulitzer Prize in music, New Orleans native Wynton Marsalis also was the first artist to win jazz and classical Grammy® Awards in the same year. His Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) features 15 of jazz music’s leading soloists and ensemble players today, drawing from an extensive repertoire including the masterworks of Ellington, Mingus, Coltrane, and other great jazz composers, and original compositions by Marsalis, Benny Carter, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Joe Lovano, Marcus Roberts, Geri Allen, Christian McBride, and others. Wynton Marsalis is a man who wears many hats—trumpeter, composer, artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and music director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. But too often it's overlooked that he first came to fame with small bands: after getting started with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, he then made musical history with his own groundbreaking septet and quintet. No matter what size band he’s leading, Marsalis' music is always breathtakingly innovative and swinging. Line-up includes Wynton Marsalis (trumpet), Kenny Rampton (trumpet), Marcus Printup (trumpet), Ryan Kisor (trumpet), Chris Crenshaw (trombone), Vincent Gardner (trombone), Elliot Mason (trombone), Victor Goines (saxophone/clarinet), Ted Nash (saxophone/clarinet/flute), Walter Blanding (saxophone/clarinet), Sherman Irby (saxophone/clarinet), Joe Temperley (saxophone/clarinet), Carlos Henriquez (bass), Ali Jackson (drums), and Dan Nimmer (piano).
