March 5-6, 2012 - Nearly 20 Bostonians joined more than 800 community development professionals from 80 cities in Chicago at Getting It Done II: Strong Communities in a Changing World. The conference, sponsored by LISC and the Insititute for Comprehensive Community Development, offered workshops designed to address challenges and commend best practices in the many sectors of the field from Implementing and Organizing to Going Global and Evaluating.

“I’ve learned an incredible amount as the LISC AmeriCorps member at the Asian Community Development Corporation. I primarily work with CHOP (Comprehensive Housing Opportunities Program)/ First Time Homebuyer Program, dealing with affordable housing and counselling. Affordable housing in communities such as Chinatown is an important need. The affordability of Chinatown has greatly changed due to gentrification and the growth of luxury condos in the area.

On Tuesday, February 28th, 2012 Mission 180 held a public forum at the Hibernian Hall in Roxbury that drew over 100 residents, organizations, public officials, and other community stakeholders. The purpose of the event was to present the analysis of 114 one-on-one conversations and launch the community action process for Dudley and Grove Hall areas of Roxbury.
Read more...NEW YORK (February 27, 2011)-- With an $85-million New Markets Tax Credits award announced last week by the U.S. Treasury Department, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) will be able to drive more vital private-sector capital into distressed commercial corridors.
LISC has the nation's largest allocation of New Markets Tax Credits. In just over a decade, the national nonprofit has used $630 million of that allocation to support projects that have created more than 17,000 jobs in communities across the country. “Those new jobs are crucial to communities suffering from high unemployment and poverty rates that climb well above the national average,” said Kevin Boes, president of New Markets Support Company (NMSC), a LISC affiliate that manages New Markets activity. "These investments help restore the economic infrastructure of disinvested neighborhoods," he added.

As the Community Planning Associate at the Fenway CDC, my main goal has been to make city planning accessible to Fenway residents. After working in public sector city planning for several years, I realized that the role of public participation in the planning process is often just a formal requirement, and little effort is made to truly engage the community. At the Fenway CDC, we believe that residents should drive the planning process, not just supplement it, because residents are the true experts on their neighborhood. Read more...
