Errare

I’m at The Flat a few Mondays ago and Rachel, the bartender (who grew up in Brazil) comes up to me and says “you know what that song is about right?!”…She’s referring to “Errare Humanum Est”, (www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7cTTKkMgT8) written by Jorge Ben, but the version I played was by Seu Jorge (www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z9V6hqt2UY). Until that time I had not heard the original. The song appears on Jorge Ben’s best album “A Tabua De Esmeralda”. Rachel piqued my interest…and this is where this story begins: (continued)

Seu did this version last year… The original dates from 1974… The song can be interpreted in many ways, I suppose, but one I found most poignant (i’ll explain later), is more to the point of Jorge Ben (a supposed devout Roman Catholic) questioning Erich Von Daniken’s theory of “Ancient Astronauts” in his 1969 book “Chariots of The Gods”… In the song Jorge Ben questions repeatedly about Gods or Astronauts.. I’m not here to enter the debate, but to shed light on the relevance of it to my life… (continued)

The song prompted me to do some soul searching, looking for my Ancient Astronauts: A trip to my “space” . I had this notion that in many different spiritual disciplines there is a distinct shift in energy in The Universe…happening right now! From a personal perspective, there were many decisions and events that were beyond my control that have potential life-changing consequences…all happening in the span of a few weeks… The prudent thing The Universe and my “astronaut” were communicating to me: become aware and prepare properly!…OR get washed away in the major shift.. (continued)

I HAD to search for MY “Ancient Astronaut”! In my hide-out and by traveling to my “space” I found my answers: Errare Humanum Est, Perseverare Diabolicum…that’s actually the entire phrase:

To Err is Human, Preserving the errors is diabolical (or of the devil)…

The soundtrack of my “space exploration” were both versions, placed on repeat as I explored for ancient “footsteps” and other signs. In the process I atoned for my human errors, found peace and prepared myself for the new Mayan Calendar, The Year of The Dragon, Neptune entering Pisces for the next 14 years, and the Age of Aquarius…

My astronaut reminded me that I was a Capricorn/Aquarius cusp! (wink wink)…

Now please go play Jorge Ben’s version, followed by Seu Jorge’s…
Let me know what you think?!

New York!

spacer

Visiting NY for a quick weekend workshop at Dub Spot After receiving some inspiration from King Britt and having tracked its capabilities since the 2010 SXSW workshops I witnessed by Dub Spot, I decided to jump in and incorporate the APC-40 into production and performance. Of course E’s E (Eric Banta from NYCTrust) has been a strong source of encouragement as well. We made “Tomorrow” with him manning Ableton Live and myself providing the samples and co-production.

Photographer Jasmine Lee Richardson did a photo shoot of some work we started on the next track. This was started at the studio in Houston and will be continued over time (including during this next trip to NYC!). Why not do a quick set at Sycamore, while I’m in NYC. This is definitely one of my fave spots to visit and play while in NY! DJ DRM (Bastard Jazz Records) co-hosts this “Neighborhood Series.” Fun times to be had! 100% guaranteed!

NYCTrust

This week I’m hosting a dear friend and colleague: Eric Banta aka DJ E’s E. He runs Names You Can Trust, a Brooklyn record label releasing choice cuts, including a number of 45s. Most recently, I scored a hot 10″ piece of vinyl from NYCTrust: “Young Folks”/ “Wolf Like Me” by The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra. Two amazing salsa covers of the respective indie hits by Peter, Bjorn & John and TV On The Radio

By the way: E’s E and I made a track together for the upcoming One Hundred album, entitled “Tomorrow”.

E’s E plays with me at The Flat on Monday Dec 19th and then again on Wednesday at Onion Creek, where we lay down all 45s.
