The ROLE Showcase Platform

This ROLE Showcase Platform displays the software created in the ROLE research project. ROLE stands for Responsive Open Learning Environments and seeks to put learners in the position to build their own technology enhanced learning environment based on their needs and preferences.  Gain a first impression of the software by reading the textual descriptions with screen shots, watch screencasts, and read example use cases. Deepen your understanding by trying the software yourself hands-on. Most software is web based and can be accessed directly via your web browser from this website; instructions and demo logins are available. In some cases you will be redirected to demo websites of our project partners. In addition some of our software is available to install in your own learning environment.

    Widget Bundles

    A Widget Bundle is a set of small web based software applications (widgets) to support a specific learning or teaching task. As an example, to build up your foreign language vocabulary, you can use a widget bundle consisting of a media reader, translation service and a vocabulary trainer.

    ROLE Tools

    ROLE Tools are software applications to build the infrastructure for Responsive, Open Learning Environments. Examples include a repository where you can choose and download learning widgets, and a learning space where you can enter widgets and collaborate with other learners.

    User Reports

    User Reports describe how Widget Bundles and ROLE Tools were used in real educational settings. The setting (target group, learning goals, didactic design, institution, or self-learning) as well as the learning environment (widgets chosen, technical setup) are described. Also experiences and feedback from learners and instructors on using the software are reported.

    Confolio - personal and shared portfolios

    Confolio gives users a convenient place to store and share material that is easily accessible from wherever you are as long as you have access to the Internet. You can upload files, link to online content such as videos, photos, lectures or even create content directly in Confolio.
    When needed, material can be organized into folders and be described using established metadata standards.

    Graaasp collaboration environment

    Graaasp is a web based collaboration environment that was built for higher education scenarios. It allows learners and instructors to create collaboration spaces and relate people, assets and tools to them.     PAcMan

    PAcMan stands for Personal Activity Manager and comprises a client-sided PLE solution which supports lifelong learners in designing their online activities, i.e. by providing facilities for managing URLs. Furthermore PAcMan enables practice sharing by empowering users to share and retrieve such online activities through a pattern repository.

    ROLE Personal Learning Management System

    The ROLE Personal Learning Management System (ROLE PLMS) is a tool supporting self-regulated learning in formal educational settings.     OpenSocial plugins for Moodle

    Moodle is a Learning Management System used in many Educational Institutions (Universities) to manage courses. It is a plugin based PHP application that can be extended by installing additional modules. Two plugins, developed in scope of the ROLE project, allow bringing OpenSocial gadgets into Moodle and using them to extend the LMS with additional features.

    Share and explore PLE practices

    This tool is based on an arbitrary set of widgets which has been designed for a specific learning situation. The idea of PLE practice sharing is that learners can share this experience voluntarily so that others can learn from and make use of it. For this purpose a learner can simply add the practice sharing widget to her space.
