Introduction
MeHere is a networked GPS tracker for Google Maps and Google Earth, it is a followup to MovinGmap, and has the following super-natty improvements:
- Windows executable, no pre-requisite fanciness or bookmarklets needed.
- Integrates with Google Earth's Network Link, allowing you to see all
your friends move around in realtime.
- Provides location data for use by other online-location based applications.
For example, you could write a greasemonkey script (see below) to make location-
oriented websites more oriented to your current exact location.

Installation and Use
- Connect your GPS to a serial port (or bluetooth serial port)
and set it to use NMEA output.
- Download the software, unpack it somewhere nice and run it.
- Select the appropriate serial port from the menu (or choose demo mode if you don't have a GPS and just want to see what all the fuss is about).
Use the MeHere system tray icon to reopen your MeHere window if you close it, or to quit MeHere.
Software Release Level
Rather than fuss around with calling things alpha or beta, I call this a 'gauge your interest' release. If people like it, then it will be updated with more features and bugfixes, if not, then it won't. No support is offered for this software, so you might want to try poking around in the forum for answers.
Platform and Source Code
This release is made for Windows, but the source code is freely available, so users of other platforms might have some luck porting it (the windows stuff non-essential and could just be cut out and have the script still work).
Extensions
The following scripts require Greasemonkey.
-
mehere.ex3.placeopedia.user.js
Adds a 'Center Map On Me' button to Placeopedia so you can see all the Wikipedia articles near you.
Developer Information
- A demo mode is available (under the serial port section) which will pretend that you have a working GPS unit connected and moving around.
- Longitude, Latitude, Status is available on localhost:7305/csv of the machine running MeHere.
- localhost:7305/js will give you the coordinates and status as javascript variables. example usage.
- localhost:7305/netlink will give you the KML placemark file.
Adding other formats is very easy, so feel free to ask.
