Technosyncratic: Behind the Scenes

We’re Christy and Kali, two idiosyncratic technogeeks in a perpetual state of wandering. We have no permanent home or residence; instead, we move constantly in search of the next adventure.

A few years ago we were living in San Diego while Christy pursued her Masters degree; we knew we’d be leaving after graduation, but assumed our next step would be determined by the Ph.D. application process. After intense deliberation, though, Christy decided not to go back to school immediately, and we suddenly found ourselves all ready to go but lacking a destination!

After tossing around the idea of moving to a different country or perhaps trying out a state we’d never been to before, we realized we weren’t ready to settle down in any one place.

The nomadic lifestyle called.

We had no home (renters), no kids (unless our dog counts), and no attachment to our furniture (primarily castoff dorm pieces). In fact, it turns out we have very few possessions of real import aside from ourselves, our computers, our dog, and our collective sense of adventure.

Add to all this the fact that we both work online, and it became apparent that it’d be ridiculous for us not to embrace the freedom that comes with being location independent.

We spent the first year of our travels living in a motorhome (aptly dubbed Mayhem) and touring the United States. A few months before our epiphany we’d stumbled upon the travel blog of an Australian couple doing something similar in the U.K.; we were so intrigued and inspired that we eventually took the plunge ourselves!

There are a lot of benefits to living in an RV, and there’s nothing quite like having a home base that’s always with you while you travel. After a year, though, we were ready for a new challenge.

We sold Mayhem, left our crazy (albeit amazing) dog with our crazy (albeit amazing) family, and hopped on a plane to London.

We’ve transitioned into a more freewheeling, unhurried, and international mode of travel.

We’re lucky enough to be able to fund our travels through our web development company, so we’re not existing on savings… and so there’s no pre-determined end in sight.

In order to make traveling full-time coexist peacefully with working full-time, we’ve adopted a more leisurely pace of exploration. We’re renting short-term apartments, housesitting in awesome locations, and remaining completely open to any random and wonderful opportunity that arises.

Our objective is to explore the places we’ve always longed to see, experience the beautiful diversity of these countries’ cultures and people, and make new friends along the way.

This blog chronicles our adventures, reflections and recommendations for living life as a digital nomad. If you have any questions (about anything!), please don’t hesitate to contact us! We’re also very active on our Facebook page and Twitter, so stop by and say hi.
